I shifted in my seat, uneasily.
Lost in thought I gazed off at nothing in particular; everything was so confusing right now and I was just trying to make sense of it. Blinking, I focused on Mr. Caethler, he was talking about the situation and explaining what was going to happen.
I guess I automatically zoned out, when a teacher just goes on and on in class I ignore it. I've tried to listen but I don't usually learn unless I'm actually doing something.
I should probably listen to him.
"...and yes, we will. Okay. So, before we get started let's make a plan, any ideas?"
Mr. Caethler wasn't necessarily a rambler, more the opposite: He lets us talk and discuss our ideas with each other so we all get a chance to talk, I like that teaching method even if we don't get much done.
People began to speak in small groups, whispers and glances were shared between mine before Koen finally spoke up.
"So we're stuck here?" He sounded irritable. It wasn't a question, it was a statement. I'd forgotten about Koen and his situation.
"Did you even hear Mr. Caethler?" Gavin said.
I gave him an odd look, the way he said it was... not harsh but not friendly. Him and Koen used to hangout all the time. They were good friends, yet it seems like Gavin still hasn't forgotten about Koen getting out of hand over food.
I looked around the room, there seemed to be tension in the air, I doubt most people were actually thinking of ideas. Most of them just seemed worried or lost in thought.
Mr. Caethler cleared his throat, gaining our attention. "So! Why don't we pick a partner to stick with?"
I leaned back in my seat and poked Aly behind me, she nodded and we turned to face each other.
"You predicted the future."
She tucked her hair behind her ear and smiled, leaning forwards in her seat. Aly was a great person, it seems like she always knows what to say and how to cheer people up or boost their confidence. She's not the person you go to for help, but she'll know when you need it.
"Hey, I didn't know this would actually happen, do you think I want this?" I laughed. This class. Insane sometimes.
Mr. Caethler clapped his hands and stole our attention again, "Let's move our desks to the outer edge of the room and clear out the center. That's where we'll sleep."
I stood up and placed a hand on my desk, Mr. Caethler continued, "...And of course safety first, the first aid kit will be on my desk the whole time. If you need to use it then make sure that-"
People started shifting their desks dragging the table legs across the floor, drowning out Mr. Caethler's voice so he just got louder. "The teachers have been informed of this event and have all corresponded with each other to make some rules!"
We made noises of protest before Mr. Caethler talked over us again, "Yes, I know. We don't like rules, but it's for your own good."
I turned my back to Mr. Caethler and began to move my desk to the side when he went over the rules. He said we don't like rules. I chuckled to myself, no, his class doesn't like rules. He doesn't like enforcing them.
"You've cursed us,"
A voice behind me spoke up.
Cursed us? Who-? I looked over my shoulder quickly, getting a glance of a familiar face. Aly's.
"Mhm? What do you mean?"
I wasn't really listening, I was fighting Gina for a spot against the wall to place my desk. I leaned forward scraping it in front of me as she pulled her desk towards the same spot.
"...might get trapped at school because of the pothole."
I missed the first part of her sentence, letting go of my desk and stopping, I paused then faced her.
"We're trapped at school because of a pothole." She repeated.
Aly seemed amused that I didn't catch on quickly, but in truth I still didn't understand her... Wait-
"Y'know I didn't mean that-"
"I know, but it's such a weird coincidence. I'm not suggesting that you have anything to do with it, it's just-" She started apologizing and I turned, feeling guilty. I really didn't mean to sound short with her I'm just too tired right now.
"...I didn't mean it like that sorry."
"I know, it's fine."
I sighed as I watched Nazi slide her desk into the open spot before laughing at my own stubbornness. Aly gave me an odd look before walking back to her own desk.
For the last few minutes I helped other people shift their desks to the side of the room. How did this even happen?
