TW: BROKEN HOME

Kuno lay quietly in the boiler room. His heart raced at insane speeds, his breathing rapid. It reminds him of something.

But what?

Memories flooded through him, memories that he wanted to leave in a shoebox deep in his closet. Better left unopened and forgotten. But I suppose that is impossible now.

His heart rate quickened and he felt himself start to shake.

Why now? Why here of all places?

Kuno was exhausted, but his body wouldn't let him rest. He stared at the ceiling of his childhood bedroom, at the spider crawling across the pasty plaster.

From down the hallway, Kuno heard a door open.

What was that?

Kuno sat up for the first time in a while, causing himself an immense headache.

He pushed through it and wrapped himself in his sunshine yellow duvet to stay warm.

Kuno made his way to his bedroom door, opening it as quietly as possible.

Kuno poked his head out, but no one was there.

He slid down the stairs, creating quiet little bumps as he hit each step.

A man stood at the door with a bag of his belongings seemingly rushing to leave.

"Daddy..?"

Kuno was confused.

Where was he going?

It was late, around 12:30 a.m.

The man looked at the stairs, to see a little Kuno wrapped up in his sweet yellow duvet with a blank look on his face.

"Buddy-! Hey, aren't you supposed to be asleep..?" the man spoke, diligently aware of his volume.

Kuno finished sliding down the stairs and walked to the door, only a few feet from his father.

"Daddy, are you leaving?" Little Kuno asked with a pouty look on his face.

His father knelt down to his height and placed a single hand on his son's head.

"I have to go.. somewhere," he said, voice cracking.

"I wish you wouldn't," Kuno said simply. "Your jokes and pranks make me smile. It wqould be so boring without you."

Kuno gave a toothy grin at the memories.

"I wanna be like you someday, Daddy."

The man's eyes widened and twitched, holding back tears. His father looked at his wrist, at an old kinetic-style watch.

12:40

The man stared at Kuno, his son.

"I'm sorry, Buddy," he said, a single tear flowing down his cheek. "I can't take you with me."

The man started to take off his watch, eyes not leaving Kuno's.

His father grabbed Kuno's smaller hand and placed the watch in it.

Kuno stared at the accessory.

It was heavy.

Kuno closed his hand and pulled it to his chest, close to his heart.

He liked it.

"I love you more than anything buddy." the man said, ruffling Kuno's hair one last time.

Kuno gave a closed-lipped smile and waved at him as he left.

"Bye Daddy!"

Little did he know that would be the last time he ever saw him.

The door opened with a shrilling creak.

"Kuno?"

Kuno was shivering under the blankets, a thick sunshine yellow duvet.

"Come on I know you're in there."

Kuno poked his head out from under the blanket with much hesitation.

"No!" he yelled, his voice raspy from crying.

The doorknob rattled.

"Kuno come on out, sweetie." his mother coaxed.

"No, I don't wanna!" Kuno yelled, burying himself in the blankets more.

"Kuno, baby, you need to eat," she said sweetly.

"I'm not coming out till he leaves!" Kuno said loudly.

His mother's new boyfriend freaked him out, the way he looked at him, the way he smiled.

He was just creepy in general.

"Kuno, Itsuki is not like that," his mom called through the door. "I don't know why you just can't accept him."

Kuno sniffled.

He didn't want to be the cause of his mother's unhappiness. That's not what he wanted at all.

Eventually, his mother's footsteps faded down the stairs, and he was alone again, in his childhood room.

All Kuno could do was hold his precious father's watch and hope for the slight sliver of a chance that he might see him again.

Little did he know that his father was an unfortunate victim of a fatal bus collision only 14 hours after his departure.
