"There's a beach like five minutes from the house, but I like this one more." Lauren said as she pulled off the street and into a small parking lot. "It's a lot less crowded."
"Fine by me." Camila smiled. "I don't mind a little ride." Lauren cleared her throat, her mind wandering. That doesn't even sound sexual, Lauren. Stop it.
The two stepped out of the car and walked towards the sand, stopping to remove their shoes. Lauren wore short swim trunks and a black bikini top while Camila was wearing a stripped bikini, a thin and flowy coverup over it. "So we can walk for a bit or just sit by the water. Your choice."
"Uh, let's just sit. We can get to know each other more." Camila smiled.
The two found a nice spot to lay their blanket down. It was a little awkward for a bit but soon the conversation was flowing and both women were laughing and talking about random things. They felt really comfortable with each other already, despite just meeting. "Can I ask you something?" Camila asked out if the blue. "It's kinda personal."
Lauren sighed. This was going so good, too, she thought. She knew Camila was aware of her condition and usually when people know, they always ask the same things: Does it look like a man's? Is it big? And her favorite: Can I see it?
While she knows they don't mean any malice by it, it gets annoying. It's like that's her one interesting trait. But, she nods, giving Camila permission.
"So, Chris told me about how you're intersex." She started, toying with the rings on her fingers. "And since then, I've wanted to ask you, what was it like? Like, going through that at such a young age." Lauren was definitely taken aback by that. "You don't have to answer. I know it's personal."
"No, it's just...no one's asked me that before." And that was true. No one had ever asked Lauren what her experience was after finding out she was intersex. "Well, I was raised as a boy. And then when I was 11, I started to hit puberty and we were all confused." She started from the beginning, laying back so she was resting on one elbow, facing Camila. "We went to the doctor and she explained what was happening and what would happen. She was the first person to tell me I was a girl." Camila nodded, her full and undivided attention on Lauren. "After that, my dad came to me and he told me that even though she said I'm a girl, that doesn't mean I am. He told me that if I still felt like a boy then that was perfectly fine."
"It was a relief to hear that." She continued, playing with a loose string on the blanket. "I was confused and like, I had grown up being told I was a boy and I was comfortable with that, you know? Thinking of myself as a girl was just...weird."
"But, you're a girl." Camila said, quickly catching herself. "I mean, like, you identify as a woman now, right?"
"Yeah," Lauren laughed lightly at Camila's panic. "It was just weird. After that, I asked my parents if they could kinda use he/him and she/her for me. So I could see what fit." She took a deep breath before continuing. "It took some getting used to but once I was more used to it, being referred to as 'her' was less jarring to hear. And soon it was uncomfortable to hear 'him'. It was like I just needed to be unconditioned from what I was told my whole life. I told my parents I want to be referred to as a girl, and we discussed names...and yeah." Lauren didn't mention what her name was before, neither had Chris. It was uncomfortable for Lauren to hear her deadname, so her family never mentioned it. She was just Lauren.
"That's awesome." Lauren looked at Camila, confused. "Like, how well your parents took it and how understanding everyone was." She explained further. "I don't know what to say, really."
"No, it's fine. It was nice to explain it all to someone." Lauren smiled.
"It was kinda cool to hear about. I was fortunate enough to understand myself at a young age." Camila started. "I knew liked guys and girls and whoever, I just didn't have a name for it. And then one of my friends from home told me about the term 'fluid' and that kinda stuck with me."
"I didn't know that." Lauren told her thoughtfully. "Does Chris know?"
"Yeah." Camila nodded. "I was nervous to tell him cause I was scared he'd ask for a threesome or something." She laughed, joined by Lauren. "But he was really understanding and accepting. Probably because he grew up with a lot of discussions on gender and sexuality."
"Yeah, my family has always been open about stuff like that."
"Are you straight?" Camila asked.
"Oh, no." Lauren laughed. "I don't really label myself, though. I just feel like I love who I love. If one day I meet a guy and fall in love, then cool. But if it's a girl, then also cool." She shrugged.
"I'm the same way." Camila smiled.
"He treats you good, though?" Lauren asked, referring to Chris.
"Yeah, he does." Camila smiled softly, unaware of the soft pang of jealousy in Lauren's chest.
