when yumemi wakes up she does not open her eyes. a part of her thinks that the last day had been a dream. a slow, cruel, and humbling dream. she expects to see her servants ushering her for breakfast when she opens her eyes, or maybe breakfast in bed as she requested the night before. but the tightening of her calf ends her short-lived fantasy and she sits up with a hiss. the odd smell of the car hit her too.
"shit..." she impatiently rubbed at the area where the cramps only seemed to get worse. and suddenly her back felt that it was a good time to begin aching too. she wants to cry to shout and wreck the whole town, when finally the pain fades.
but the discomfort of sleeping in the backseat of a car arrives.
with struggle she hops out of the car and is hit by the cold dawn air. it's not like it's felt warm in the town since she arrived. it was a town up north, and yumemi wishes she brought more clothes.
the sun barely peeked through the horizon but she could already see a few elderly walking the streets. she unlocks the bakery door and makes a face at the lingering odor of the store. it would be days of cleaning before it properly disappeared. no customers would want to buy goods from an unsanitary store, even just in smell.
yumemi thinks she did a decent job at cleaning the bathroom at the back of the store, but she nonetheless used it with caution. when she properly examined the small room she reached a reasonable conclusion: "i am not taking a shower in here."
there was no drain anyway. so she takes her bag of clothes and approaches the nearest elderly she could find sitting on a bench across the street.
"er... good morning..." she skittishly says, giving a half-hearted bow.
the old woman looks up from her book and squints. "i haven't seen you around before. are you new to the town, dear?"
"...yes.."
"ahh, it's so nice to see new faces here! we never get tourists, and all the young people have up and left for the city!"
"no wonder they left. this place is an old, disgusting wasteland." yumemi thinks in a disdainful voice. "there's no way you can revive this town." for a moment it hits her that, yes, there is no way to bring people into the town, and there is no way she would be able to pay her debts in a town more dead. but she pushes all her negative thoughts into the back of her mind.
"what brings you here?" the old woman asks and yumemi stutters out a reply with something along the lines of work. "i remember being young and wanting to find work too. i wanted to be an accountant. so i moved here because of a work offer. ah, but now the town barely has businesses. we get supplies from..."
yumemi began tapping her foot. this woman wouldn't stop talking. all she wanted to do was take a shower. eventually she reached a lull in the conversation, and used that opportunity to mumble a goodbye and come back to the bakery.
she hears a meow as she defeatedly tosses her bag into her car. her eyes wandered to the sound, becoming fixated on the eyes of a stray cat who's stare seemed so intense that some might not want to believe it is a cat at all.
the cat's black fur was soaked with water along with dirt stuck on it. it was a bit of a disturbing state that the cat was in. but alas yumemi ignored it and focused on finding somewhere to shower.
not wanting to waste the last amount of fuel in her sorry excuse of a car, she decides to walk through the town to familiarize everything. (it's not like she was paying attention)
the pavement had cracks, occasional puddles here and there from the night rain, passing through street lights that looked too busted to even open at night, and a small street food stand in the corner.
