"She was originally an Abject. She was one of the select few that was academically advanced enough to become a Magnate citizen. Dad was considered brave for marrying an Abject girl. He was different then though. He still didn't love her. He just loved the attention because she was special and he was because of her. When I was born dad was happy for a while. I remember he used to take me on walks and fly kites and mom was happy. I remember when she got pregnant with you. Everything was great, until something suddenly changed. One day he came home from work and he just wasn't the same it's like someone flipped a switch in his head. I remember he had stitches on the back of his neck. He hardly talked to me and he despised you. When you were about 2 he started hitting. Mom knew it would get worse, so she packed me a bag and paid guards the get me out."
"So you were never really missing?" I asked her calmly.
"No, that was how my mother covered up my escape. I was only 8. I knew how to read, write, and fight. Mom always made sure I could defend myself. She gave me a slip of paper that said grandma's address."
"Our grandma, I've never even thought about never meeting my grandparents."
"Yeah you don't realize what you miss out on inside the city. Once I found her and explained she took me in. I've been here ever since. Mom used to send notes when I was younger, but she stopped."
"That's what she was doing with me too, but she was gonna come with me. Cam she tried to but dad found her and killed her and the guards took me."
We sat in silence for a couple minutes before Dex began to speak.
"Hey foods on me. Order anything you like." he said.
Cam grabbed his hand and smiled gratefully. I ordered crepes with cream cheese and strawberries, Cam got whatever an omelet is and Dex got an extra large french vanilla cake batter iced coffee. Most complex coffee order I've ever heard. It was really good food. Not to mention it'd been at least a day since I'd last eaten.
"After we finish up we have to get you out of these clothes. Don't worry about money we have plenty. Don't we Dex. I'll show you some time." Cam said as she giggled.
We got done eating and they took me to this little shop. Well it looked little from the outside. It was huge inside. It had tall ceilings and rack after rack of clothes. They had bullet proof vests and cargo pants and all sorts of stuff. It was mostly all militant. I didn't mind considering that's what I like to wear, but I had a feeling this wasn't just for looks.
"You'll get your guard uniform next week", Cam said to me, "We all do our time in the mines one way or another most of us find a way out."
I picked a pair of navy blue cargo pants, dark yellow cargo pants ,and a pair of lavender cargo pants. I found about ten shirts I liked all of them were tight fitting with cutouts in several colors. I decided on one vest that was a greyish color. I got the basic stuff too, some socks, a backpack, undershirts, some bras and underwear. While checking out I spotted a jacket I liked too. Cam paid for everything and I put everything in the backpack and we went on our way back to Cam's cottage.
When we got there there was a boy about my age maybe a year or two older in the garden. He walked over to the door and whispered something to Cam.
"This is Violet, Ash and Vi this is Ashton." she said looking at me.
He grinned and said," Well it's nice to meet you"
