The Mikealsons family was a shell of the family it used to be. In fact they rarely saw each other, despite the promises they made to their brothers on the day they died. The vow that lasted a millennium broke with them.
Niklaus was always pushing for them to be closer, even though his mind 'trapped' them with believing any form of leaving was abandonment. How naive they were to miss the fact that it was one of the things that held them together through out the years.
The other thing was elijah his dedication to the vow they had made before their immortality had barely begun. Though he was closer to Niklaus, it didn't mean he loved the rest of his family any less. He noticed things that no one else could, the slightest twitch of a false smile, and he was there as a shoulder to cry on or a person to vent to. No matter what he was going through he always made sure that he held everyone else's problems before his own. And he did his best to never break his promises.
That was what haunted them the most, while their absence hurt, the pain of failing them hurt more. They were supposed to protect Hope, to guide her through the pain of losing both of her parents and her first protector. But they didn't know how to talk to her. How were they suppose to approach a girl who not only lost her everything, but also lost what could have been. The family she could have had, if they all could have been there for her childhood, if her father could be there.
So when she asked to go back to her school, not a week after she lost everything, they allowed it. After that, the final pieces of the broken family retreated back to different corners of the world. They still talked, not only to Hope but eachother, every week. Until eventually every week turned into every other. Soon reduced to no more than a blue moon.
The check ups Hope got were practically a shared routine, the traditional, how are you, what have you learned at school. Before the I miss you, I love you, goodbye.
Standing here in the town they loathed, it was the start of their lives, but it was also the beginning of their ruin. Some of the worst memories held in the soil of their childhood. Standing in the school built on the name of those who hated theirs. How had they fallen so far?
" What are we doing here Alaric and where is our niece?" Freya says calmly, talking before any of her siblings could stir up the past.
"That's why I asked you to come."
" Well get on with." Rebakah says, already worried about her niece, more and more by the second.
" Hope was fighting another Malivore monster, it was trying to curse one of the younger kids-"
" What in the bloody hell is a Malivore monster?"
" Hope didn't tell you? She said she talked to you? That she spent an hour convincing you to let her stay." He said switching his questioning gaze from Rebekah to freya.
" What?"
" This is going to be hard than I thought." He thought it would be impossible, and likely deadly.
———
" So let me get this straight, you made Hope, a child, the defender of your school. And then you neglected to tell us."
Before they could respond Lizzie came bursting in with purpose, and behind her was Josie attempting to hold her back.
" Girls?"
"She found out they were here and is still a bit mad." Josie explained her fuming twins behavior.
" A bit! I'm planning to find out if their teeth grow back!" (They do)
"Your daughter is just as charming as her mother was Alaric."
" Rebekah." Freya said with a glare only an older sister could accomplish. " Why are you angry with us?"
" You leave Hope alone for years, and the second she goes missing you pretend to care."
" Missing?" Normally a tone like that would end a lot bloodier, but first where was hope?
"Lizzie!" Josie exclaimed, hiding behind her hand.
" How was I supposed to know dad didn't tell them yet."
" Alaric, where is she?" The lights flickered with Freya every word.
"It's not so much where, as it is a when problem."
" Really time travel? Alaric, old age doesn't suit you." Dementia was the much easier explanation, then his favorite niece being trapped in the past.
" Told you they wouldn't believe us, we can take care of it ourselves dad."
" Let's say we believe you. Just for the sake of it, what time period is she in?"
" God I hope it's not the seventies, you three are lucky you missed that."
" Fifteenth hundreds." Instantly kol and Rebekah looked at eachother. If they could pick the worse possibility that would be it.
" Where?" Suddenly Rebekah's voice sounded more serious than ever.
" What?"
" Is she in england?" Kol continued for his little sister. If a witch of Hope's caliber was in England klaus would know.
" Yes, the spell the monster used bound her to her blood in that time. She's tethered to her father."
" Hope is with Niklaus, right after the Katerina thing?"
" She'll be fine, Freya."
" Rebekah that's when the witches-"
" I'm aware."
"What are you guys hiding?"
Freya was just as confused as the Saltsman's. Why were her little siblings so okay with their niece being with her father during one of his most murderous times? Niklaus was a force any year but then he was more careless about Mikeal finding him. Thinking all hope of recovering his wolf side was lost, his death toll was higher than ever.
" It is family business, meaning you can bug off."
" Kol they might need to know,-"
" Absolutely not."
" What are you two going on about?" Freya spoke up annoyed about being left in the dark.
" Kol! For the sake of Hope."
" It will do her no good. We buried it-"
Freya shook her head at Alaric telling him to let them argue it out, knowing they would do whatever it took to get Hope back. " Well maybe it's time to unbury it. Nik is gon-"
" Just because they were bound doesn't mean he's the only one who mourned." He shouts springing up from his seat. Him and rebekah only inches away from each other." Kol for Hope!"
Kol stood in silence for a moment before he began talking. " There is something we haven't spoken of in a millennium."
" Kol?"
" Althea, Niklaus' twin." Rebekah spoke up as tears gathered in kols eyes.
" Another Mikaelson? Since when does Klaus have a twin."
" Had. She died when we were human, years before, Henrik. She was the kindest person I've ever met. When she died we made a vow to never bring her up again, especially to Nik. Even Mikeal wasn't cruel enough to say her name in his presence. Eventually around Nik, became never all together." Rebekah starts, looking to kol to continue, knowing he could explain magic better than she could have.
"Why?" Alaric asks curiosity, getting the best of him.
" They both possessed the wolf gene and remnants of their witch gene connected them psychically, they basically shared a soul. When she died we didn't know if he'd survive. He almost didn't, eventually he shut his emotions about her down completely. He was a time bomb until we turned, then he blew and then he was just angry."
"Anyway its how we know Klaus won't touch Hope. Nik did a great deal at hiding it but every time he saw someone that looked like her in danger he stopped to make sure they were okay, because just for a moment he could save her."
" What does Hope have to do-"
" Hope is practically her doppelganger, minus the hair."
