Present
I wakeup to the sound of Taylor Swift's, "You need to calm down" ,blaring from my phone. I picked it up saw that it was my obnoxiously sweet and kind, best friend Maya. I tapped answer.
"What were you doing?" Maya asked from an eerily calm voice.
"Sleeping, what else should I be doing this early in the morning?" I asked her irritatingly. Still half asleep.
"Oh I don't know, last time I recall something about getting ready to write the entrance exam for your favourite academy" she sassed.
It took me a while, for her words to register in my head and I shot out of the bed as her words finally register.
"Shit!" I cursed as I bolted to my bathroom.
"No shit, bitch" Maya cursed back.
"Calm down it's still early, I knew you would wakeup late and shit yourself trying to make it in time. So as your loyal friend I set my alarm early and called you. Be ready in 30 minutes, I'll be there to pick you up."I released a relieved breath seeing that it was only 6 o'clock.
"You scared the shit out of me you little witch, but thanks. I owe you one Maya""You owe me more than one Mara, but I want one of your crystal vials for this one" she said. Referring to my private crystal vial collection I had started to collect since I was six, when my mother gave me a blue crystal vial for my sixth birthday.
The last birthday I celebrated.
"Nuh uh, you know anything but that" I said sternly. It was mine and mine alone.
"A girl can dream..." she said dreamily.
I huffed out a laugh.
"I'm hanging up, I have to get ready. Ti amo piccola strega.(Love you little witch)""Anche a te caro.(You too dear)" she said before I hang up.
Maya Benevento is a witch and my best friend since 10th grade. We both met in the new Paranormal Introduction 101 class, in Rock Coven High School, and been best friends ever since. So now you can understand, why she day dreams about my crystal vials.
The thing is, in our world humans don't know about the existence of paranormal species like vampires and werewolves. Only the influential socialites and some special human families like mine knew about it.
My family is originally from Italy where there were many witch covens. They were luckily on their good side and was in on how the paranormal world works.
There was a time when normal humans found out about witches, and started hunting them in Italy. So my grandparents with my mom and dad fled to London with the other witches.
Actually I didn't know anything about the paranormal world until I turned six. And I still don't like how I found out about it that day.
Now I live in the edge of London, in a cloaked witch coven. It cannot be seen by those who are not allowed to enter. I've been living here since I was born.
It is not a small village like some would think. It has it's own city hall, school, library and everything necessary for a person to live there until they die.
And I live here with my grandma in a big cottage like house with Sasha, my pet owl. And today I am going to write the entrance exam for Blue Moon Academy, the most well known academy in the paranormal world.
I showered, dressed myself and got the things necessary for the exam.
Since it was fall and there was a slight chill in the air I wore a sweater knitted by my grandma and tied my black hair to the side. When I was sliding my bag onto my shoulder, I heard the horn sound of Maya's jeep.
"Amara, caro (Amara, dear), Maya's at the door." I heard my grandma call out to me.I raced down the stairs and opened the door.
"No excuses, I know you didn't have breakfast and I'm sure grandma has prepared more than enough food for both of us. Let's go." I said to Maya, while dragging her inside to the house and into the kitchen where the smell of fresh pancakes and blueberry and whipped cream sauce that was my grandma's specialty.
"Woah girl, I'm not complaining" said Maya, clearly amused with my energy today.
Blue Moon Academy has been my dream ever since I've heard about it in 10th grade.
"How have you been Frannie?" Maya asked my grandma while removing her jacket.
"Doing better than ever dear" said my grandma while loading two plates with pancakes and setting then on the breakfast counter.
Francesca Elizabeth Ray, my grandmother. Even at the age of 72, was a force to be reckoned with. Bright amber eyes, straight silver hair with a well aged face, she looks 40 than her 72 years.
"Good morning, nonna" I said while kissing her on the forhead and smelling her earthy lavender scent. Like always, it immediately calms my senses, leaving a smile on my face.
"Morning, Amara. How are you feeling?"
"Excited, nervous, anxious, giddy and a little afraid." I admitted. I don't know why, but I can never lie to grandma, even if I did she will always press for the truth.
"If you are afraid of failing the entrance exam, I wouldn't worry that much. You worked your ass off to study and prepare for the test and I'm sure you'll pass." Maya chirped in.
"That's right dear. You studied well, I'm sure you'll pass." My nonna assured me. But still I could see the hesitation in her eyes that I saw that first time I announced to her that my dream was to go to Blue Moon Academy for college studies.
I think it is mostly because of me being a human and Blue Moon Academy being a paranormal academy that also teaches humans that know about their species.
I finished my pancakes with the blueberry sauce and stood up to wash my plate. Maya followed behind me.
"The pancakes were great nonna" I told her while loading the dishwasher.
"You rock that blueberry sauce, Frannie" said Maya, winking at nonna.
"Oh, girls. It was nothing." As usual nonna downplays her talent in the kitchen.
"Are you going to the Forest club today too nonna?" I asked her.
" Yes, dear" her answer vague as always.
"Then we will be leaving Frannie" Maya said while grabbing me and dragging me to the door."
"Goodbye nonna. See you later. Don't do anything that I would do." I waved at her teasingly.
"Be safe Amore mio" said nonna staring at me.
"Let's go and hex the entrance exam" squealed Maya dragging me to her jeep.
"Yeah, let's go and rock it." I said after her. But my mind was uneasy.
I wished my grandma had warned my past self at the breakfast counter, about the change that was about to happen in my life.
