Chapter 2: New Jobs, Mustard Men, and Being Whelmed

Recap:”this is Phantom, she’s going to be your new trainer!” There was a moment of shock before everyone except for Diana, Bruce, Ollie, and Robin looked at me and yelled "WHAT?!" I have a feeling that this is gonna be interesting.

They all stared at me dumbfounded while Bruce and Diana started to explain. “This is Phantom. You might have heard of her a couple of months ago from her work with Green Arrow and Black Canary in Star City, and just recently she’s been working in Gotham.” Bruce started, “She’s been thoroughly evaluated by Arrow, Wonder Woman and I as well as Robin and I expect that you will treat her with the same level of respect you would treat us with.” Artemis and Aqualad looked at me in disbelief while Miss Martian had a look of excitement on her face and Kid Flash seemed to just be staring at me. “Excuse me sir but how could she possibly train us when she seems to be the same age as us?” Asked Aqualad in a questioning tone. Diana simply smiled before asking “Robin, would you please play the clip from two weeks ago?” “The one from the museum?” He questioned. Diana answered back a yes before Robin used his watch to play a video on the huge tv the team was facing. The video opened with a view from behind me as I watched a group of goons from the shadows across from a museum. I remembered that night. 

Flashback

The goons were part of the Penguins crew and had been sneaking into museums and taking as many jewels as possible before the police or Batman showed up. Penguin was currently nowhere to be seen but I assumed he would show up at some point. I waited for the goons to leave the museum before jumping from the shadows and tackling two of the goons to the ground, effectively knocking them out. I quickly jumped to my feet and dodged a punch to the face from goon number three then crouched as goon number four dove for me before sweeping my right leg in a semicircle, kicking goon three’s legs out from under him. I sprung up just in time to catapult myself into a flip over goon four, using his shoulders as leverage. He turned around and started running at me so I waited till he was almost right in front of me before I elbowed him in the teeth, spun, and flipped him over my shoulder knocking him out. It was at this time that goon three decided to rejoin the party. He threw a punch at me so I dodged before grabbing him by the head and slamming it down at the same time my knee kicked up, kneeing him in the face and knocking him out. I heard footsteps behind me and turned, roundhouse kicking at the same time, only to be met by Batman standing there with an unamused look on his scowling face. “Shouldn’t you be with Wonder Woman?” he asked. “No, I may work with her but I am my own hero, I am not her sidekick.” I answered back. He looked at me, still scowling before disappearing into the shadows

End Flashback

As the video finished the team stared at me, once again dumbfounded. Surprisingly Superboy was the first person to speak up. “I recognized some of the techniques you used” he stated “they are the same ones Black Canary used on me the first time I sparred with her.” The team seemed to realize this too and looked to me for an answer, so for the first time today I spoke. “Yes, those are some of Canary’s moves. I spent some time as a newbie hero training with her and GA in Star City before going out on my own there, with their guidance of course.” Miss Martian looked troubled and I wondered why until I remembered that she was the telepath and the mind reader of their group, and she couldn’t read my mind. “Something troubling you?” I asked her with a knowing smirk on my face. She looked at me surprised that I caught her confusion before speaking. “Your mind, I can’t read it, why?” The entire team looked at her surprised that my mind couldn’t be read before looking over at me for more answers. I sighed before glancing over at Diana, silently asking if it was ok that I tell them the truth. She nodded at me, giving me the green light so I turned to my new students and gave them the answer they wanted. “My mind has been shielded by magic, taught to me as a child while training with the Amazons in Themyscira.” For the first time that day the ginger haired boy spoke up. “ You grew up on Themyscira?” He asked me. “Sort of,” I replied “I wasn’t an Amazon and neither was my mother so I didn’t live there all the time. I mostly lived with my mom who traveled a lot and this summer camp that a bunch of the kids on my mom’s side of the family went to. I’ve only been to Themyscira a handful of times with my aunt.” They all nodded in understanding and turned back to Bats as he started speaking. “Now Phantom will be living in the cave with you on weekends but will have to stay with her guardian Wonder Woman during the week to go to school.” “Actually Batman there's a Zeta Tube entrance about five blocks from my school so I could live here full time if you need me to” I responded. He looked over at Diana for confirmation and when she nodded a yes he gave a nod back and corrected his earlier statement, saying that I will be living here full time with them. “Will she be going on missions with us?” This time it was Artemis who spoke up, she had a bit of a scowl on her face as she asked this. Batman spoke up again, “Most of the time no, she will only be a trainer as she has her own heroing to do outside of training you. However, if the league thinks that you guys need a bit of extra help for one or two missions she will be asked to provide her assistance.” Artemis didn’t look too pleased that there was going to be another person to account for on missions but didn’t question Bats, instead it was Robin who asked the next question. “Will Canary still be training us as well?” “Yes she will, and she’s very excited for next week. She has a lot of ideas now that her favorite pupil is here with you guys.” Ollie explained with a smile on his face. “Now if that's all the questions you have for us we’ll leave you guys to get to know each other” Diana said. “Are we allowed to know her identity?” Miss Martian spoke. Diana, Ollie, and Bats had a silent conversation before Diana and Ollie both nodded and Batman gave Miss Martian a “only if she’s comfortable with it” before they all left back to the Watchtower through the Zeta Tubes. The moment they left the team all turned to me expectantly. I realized that they were waiting for me to tell them if I was gonna let them know my identity and decided to have a bit of fun with it. “I’ll tell you my identity, if one of you can figure it out yourself before the end of the week. Oh, and Robin is not allowed to tell you if he figures it out first.” They looked at me in disbelief before shouting that it isn't fair because I could literally be anyone. “Well since you think it's unfair I'll give you all a couple of hints. My first name means of the heavens, I go to Gotham Academy, and my middle name is Marie.” Artemis and Kid Flash looked contemplative before walking away to begin their investigation, while Miss Martian simply gave me a smile before asking if I wanted a tour of the cave. I said yes and off we went.
