Dear Mother

Dear Mother, before the noose is placed around my neck I write to you. My final words before I am set to be hung are contained in the letter I write to you today. First I would like to say that I am sorry.

During my time in this cell, I have been reflecting upon the years that I have spent so hard trying to forget. And as I have recycled and taken another glance at my memories I have come to regret the time that I have spent half a world away from you.

As I stare out upon the courtyard where I see the gallows. The very place where I will take my last breath before I leave you and this world of ours. I wonder what you and my siblings will think.

 What you my family shall think of me? Will you join my brother and cheer at the mere thought of the noose going around my neck? Or will you weep at the loss of your elder son?

I am very sure you have read the newspaper or listened to the radio and know of what sin I have committed. I pray for your forgiveness, for all the trouble, pain, and sorrow I have brought upon you. Along with the agony I will bring upon with my execution for my heinous crime.

My sin, the murder of a lowly prostitute. You know I loved him truly, this I tell my dear mother in this letter is true I did love him. But he kept flirting with other men and women. Even after I ordered him to stop!

Even after I told him that he could come with me back home and get away from the hell he lived he still flirted! So I slit his throat.

Do I regret it now as I write to you my final testament? Yes, I do. Perhaps I should have kicked him to the street where he belonged.

But I did not and now I am here today awaiting the guard to open my cell and escort me on my way to take my last breath. I am here today to have the noose placed around my neck and hung for my sin. I am here today writing my dear mother this letter for which she shall cherish in agony.

Dear mother, please tell the rest of my family how much I love them and how deeply sorry I am for all of this. Please remember the good and how much I love you. Also please forgive me for the agony and pain my sins have brought upon you all.

Just as Colbert finished his final letter the door to his cell squeaked open. "Are you ready, boy?" It was the guard, Colbert turned to look at him and said "yes just, please give this letter to my mother" the guard nodded as he took the letter and placed it in his breast pocket. "With me, it is time for you," the guard spoke.

Colbert sighed and followed the guard. As they walked down the hall the other prisoners stood at their cell doors and watched as Colbert was led down the halls to his final moments.

Some spoke, others did not. A blanket of somberness was placed over the room as they simply watched while Colbert was led to slaughter. But Colbert didn't care for he only had a few more precious moments to reflect on the grief he had caused his family.

In the courtyard, the guards stood stoically watching as Colbert was led to his execution. Colbert walked his final steps to the gallows. As he stood waiting death placed the noose around his neck.

After the noose was placed around his neck a guard stepped forward, "Colbert S. Anderson, you are here today to be hung by the neck until death for the murder of Richard R. Splicer." Colbert looks up at the sky. 'For such a melancholy day the sky sure is bright and full of life,' Colbert thought, "That I am" Colbert whispers to himself, death hummed in acknowledgment, "do you have any final words?"

"I do" Colbert answered the guard as he continued to look to the clouds. "Then speak them now," the guard replied, Colbert drew a deep breath, "as much as it hurts, even though it may no longer be reciprocated; I sill adore you. And if I could travel back to where it all went wrong, I would change everything."

The guards stood there in silence for a moment. "Let the execution commence!" The guard ordered.

Colbert closed his eyes as death pulled the lever dropping him and snapping his neck.
