-Mermaids-

"Darryl, you can't go on the surface. It's too dangerous." My mother said, I'm only a 16 years old mermaid.
my grandmother used to tell me and my siblings stories about when she was younger..

She said she would go on the surface sometimes, and she had a human friend, she would go often until some humans tried to kill her.

Everyone else think all humans are bad, But I think some of them might be good people, just like how some mermaids are bad.. I know that my mother just want to protect me, but stopping me from going on the surface will just make me want to go there even more..

I really wonder... What is it like to walk..?
Is it different from swimming?

They told us, go on the surface on your own risk.. but if I get caught they won't help me, because they already did warn me..
So I should NOT go on the surface.. stay in the water..

But why is it so tempting..
and why am I going up right now...
What is that... Light?
Like grandmother said, The sun?
I've never seen the sun.. or grass.. or anything from the surface actually.. I only know it's there because my grandmother mentioned those. She even tried to explain how the humans walk before, Never understood. she knew everything..

I stopped.. Right before I got out of the water, how do I breath if there is no water..?
But I want to see..

I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and grabbed the grass that was there to get myself out of the water..
I opened my eyes slowly..

Wow, this isn't as pretty as grandmother said.. Maybe it changed though, she is quite old after all..
I touched the grass a bit, It feels so weird in my hand..
...
I looked around, wondering how I could go out of the water.

But I can't keep my breath in anymore, I tried to breathe, and I could..?
We don't need water to breathe?
I know that humans can't breath water so I thought it'd be the opposite and we couldn't breath air..

That is awesome..!
I can breath on the surface! which mean I'll be alright!

I looked around, and saw a thing, it moved, and got close to me, smelling me, it had small hair all over it's body.

"What are you?" I let out, perhaps it can talk.. somehow..
..... It didn't talk.

I heard noises, something is coming close so I quickly went under water, but I kept my eyes out just so that I can see what is there..

And the creature with hair left, running.

There's a person that came over, panting, and they fell down, I stared at them, not making noise..

Is that a human?
They looked behind them, there was so many big long tall brown stuff around that the human probably wasn't able to see where they came from..

They sighed and and sat down, taking their breath back, I'm really wondering why they were so scared..

They were looking at their.. things that they walk with.. Legs? right?
I stretched a bit out of the water to see and the leg had a big scratch on it..

"W-What the hEll,." the human talked so I looked at them, they were looking at me.
I stared at them for a second.. they looked terrified of me?

After a bit of staring, the human looked quite more relaxed, and crawled closer to me, but I quickly got away and hissed at them.

They stopped directly and tilted their head, I was told to not go near humans because they're dangerous and heartless, but why was this one scared of me then?

That human looked kind, and I don't think they even thought of hurting me.. I went closer to them, so that we are quite close.

"hello there.." The human said, I didn't even know humans talked the same language as us.. "What are you.. A mermaid..?" I nodded, getting more close and got out of the water a bit more so that the human could easily see me.

"You're beautiful" the human looked amazed to see me.. I am amazed to see them too.

"what is your name?" The human asked, I wasn't sure if I should tell, And I don't want to talk yet, so I stayed quiet.

The human smiled at me, "my name is Zak, it's nice to meet you" The human said, smiling at me, I'm guessing he's a boy.. I smiled a bit.

I won't let him know I can talk yet, at least he knows I can understand, so it will be enough..

"They told me mermaids were mean and heartless- So why are you so kind to me" The human asked, and I started at him, they say that to them.? Just like how they told us that humans are bad..

I stared at him, and tilted my head, to let him know that I wouldn't hurt a fish.

"you're in a lake.." He said, I looked at him, no idea what a lake is.. "Does it,... go deep?" He asked, I nodded slowly, and he stared at me.

"I get why people tell us to not swim here then.." I stared at him, Humans swim too?? He will never stop surprising me. But how do they- They have no tail, they can't even breath under water!

I was looking at his legs, my brain is not processing, how can they swim.. I know they can walk with those,.

"Why are you looking at my legs like that?" The human asked, it made me look at him quickly, He looked confused, and I did too.

"Do you.. not know what they are-" He asked, which I raised an eyebrow, and went closer, making me sit on the ground so I am just beside him.

"how to I explain this- Uhm- It's legs, To walk, and do stuff-" He tried to explain, which I still didn't understand but I'm guessing it's a human thing. He looked at my tail, amazed, and slowly touched it, I didn't mind, so I let him do.

I heard noises coming near, so I quickly went back in the water, And Zak looked at me confusedly, I don't know if he can hear as well as me, since his ears seems smaller..

"Zakk???" Someone yelled, which made the human freeze up a bit and turn around, I saw someone approaching so I quickly went underwater and left.

I like him, he seems nice. I feel bad for leaving like that, but I can't let anyone else see me, Zak was just accidental..

I quickly swim back to the town. The tunnel gets straight to my house, so when I got inside, my whole family yelled at me, asking where I was.

I didn't know If I could say it, so I just didn't.
I said I was just swimming around, quite away from the town tho.

They believed me easily. I even told them I like doing that so I might again, so tomorrow I will go back on the surface and see if I can see The human again.

For now I'll sleep.
