The Mystic Falls annual Carnival had arrived in town.
And what better way to distract yourself from the never-ending torment of Elena's life than by helping organize the whole thing.
With the help of Jenna watching Natalie, Elena found herself with a clipboard in her hands, in front of a truck loaded with carnival toys.
She stood with Bonnie, trying to become too distracted to hear what her friend was saying, but it didn't work.
"I mean, Katherine looked just like you. It was freakish." Bonnie said.
Elena sighed, the ink from her pen bleeding from the forceful way she hadn't realized she was writing. "She is my ancestor." She looked around, casually trying to steer the conversation away from that topic. "Hey, I moved the student booth into the cafeteria."
"Your vampire ancestor," Bonnie's brows furrowed, searching for the right words. "And she didn't just resemble you like a family member would. She was you."
Elena just wanted Bonnie to pick up on the subtle ways she had been trying to avoid the topic. But her friend was relentless. Elena grabbed a bag of prizes and headed toward the booths. "I don't know. I can't explain it. Ok? It's creepy. It's all I got."
"Well, how do you know she's not still out there pretending to be you?"
And that was something that did cross her mind, once or twice, every hour. "I don't, but I could sit here and be tortured by the not knowing or I could get these prizes to the ring toss."
"Well, have you talked to Damon since he killed Jeremy," Bonnie asked. "or tried to kill Jeremy?"
A spike of anger simmered in her chest at the thought. "No, Bonnie, I haven't and I won't, and I don't want to talk about Damon or anything else that's vampire-related, okay?" said Elena, pushing a bag of stuffed animals into her arms.
"Copy that," Bonnie smiled softly, teasing her with the prizes.
"I'm human," Elena sighed, grabbing her clipboard as she leaned her hip on the booth. "I have to do human stuff. Otherwise, I'm gonna go crazy."
"Ok. I'm sorry." Bonnie said. "I'll focus. We have to make Caroline proud, or she will kill us. I don't know how she does this all the time."
"Well, because she's not human, obviously." Elena joked.
Bonnie let out a laugh. "Obviously."

Elena walked into the school, searching for her brother, squeezing through the tightly packed crowd, and apologizing as she brushed past people in her path. She caught sight of Jeremy talking to her boyfriend by his locker.
"Right. Well, today we have a nice little distraction courtesy of slave driver Elena." Stefan turned to her, sliding his arm around her waist as she approached them mid-through their conversation. "Hello, Elena."
"Hey. Um, do you— " She began, but Jeremy interrupted her.
"Yeah, yeah, I set up the goldfish toss, all three hundred goldfish. It's gonna be epic." Jeremy said before she could say anymore, slamming his locker, and walking away.
