Backstory: Shearwater was hatched before the w.o.s.s and grew up in a family of merchants that visited both of the seawing palaces to sell things to seawings or fellow merchants. They lived at a nearby island that was close to the palaces. Shearwater's family would mostly sell ink to Queen Coral for her stories. Shearwater was introduced to surfing after watching some dolphins do it and copied what they were doing and would go surfing for fun during her childhood after hours of practicing surfing for two months. Shearwater was very close with her sister and introduced her to surfing where the two would compete against each other once Shearwater had finished teaching it to her.

During Shearwater's teen years, her family went through financial troubles because Whirlpool had increased the demand of the ink that Shearwater's parents sell which was hard to get in general. Shearwater found it was much easier to provide for her family by stealing which caused her to get in trouble a lot.
She was an adult when the war had started, Shearwater had lost touch with her sister and family and she fled to the bay of a thousand scales to escape the war and would turn to a life of piracy.
Shearwater would attack scouting parties from different tribes, including her own by ambushing them and bringing them to the water and heading off with their valuables.
Over time, Shearwater would find other seawings and started the pirate crew: "The Black Seaweed." The crew would make a hideout on one of the islands on the bay of thousand scales, in a large cave which had different sections that lead to large rooms.
Shearwater would stay away from Coral's palaces, not knowing what had happened to the summer palace. When Shearwater heard that war had ended, the Black Seaweed crew would continue to steal from passing dragons and avoiding the law enforcement. One day after stealing from passing dragons and found an egg close to an underwater geyser and waited for some dragon to retrieve the egg and soon brought it back to her hideout and took care of the egg until a healthy dragonet girl hatched from the egg. Shearwater named the dragonet: "Caribbean" and raised her. She'd keep Caribbean close to the hideout and let her play in the tidepools and assigned Triggerfish to watch over her while they were out which Shearwater made Caribbean the crew's lookout. Shearwater would introduce Caribbean to surfing which turned out to be Caribbean's favorite activity with her. Shearwater wasn't sure if she should introduce Caribbean to her family since she was an outlaw, as fate would have it; young Caribbean would go to the other island that was close to the hideout and met Vaquita, after a brief explanation from Shearwater about Caribbean, the sisters agreed that Shearwater would introduce Caribbean to her parents which turned out well and Shearwater agreed to visit with Caribbean during their free time.
