Cold. That is all I feel. Freezing cold, like that of a corpse. The kind of cold that feels as if it is burning. The cold barely affects me, not at this point in my existence. This cold – it is normal. It is something I feel almost every moment of my life. But this moment, this one right now, is an entirely rare moment. A moment where I feel warmth. Just the warmth from the flick of a match, so small that it seemed it would go out at the faintest touch of breath. Just a little light and warmth in a dark, freezing place. I almost pity this light. I know that, soon, it will be smothered by the cold. But for now, I stand by this tiny, hopeful flame and let it warm me.
I know there isn't much time left for this flame. I watch it flare up, using the rest of the oxygen in our tight space, before slowly dying out, leaving the faint smell of smoke and sulfur in its place.
This is my life; waiting for that small match. There are so few of them, I sometimes feel death and cold creeping into me before it shows itself again. I never expect anything bigger than this flame. And I never receive it. I can hardly remember the last time I saw a large flame. Like the sun. The sun doesn't exist anymore. Not for me.
That is, until my world starts revolving again. I watch one of my small flames expand and extend, filling my space, filling my heart and soul. This impossible flame turns into a brightness I thought I would never see again.
My sun.
