The white wolf raises its head, its mouth smeared with deep, red blood. She is screaming, calling my name, begging me to help her. I see a flash of amber eyes and white teeth and then the wolf is gone. I am left with her body, muddied and bleeding.

Mommy...

Wake up, mommy.

Wake up!

Pain. That's all I feel when I come to. Am I dead? Have I gone to hell? The pressure of another hand in mine gives me my answer. I'm not dead yet. The burning pain is only in my head. It ricochets in my skull, giving me a pounding headache.

I try to open my eyes. I think that if I do, the pain will go away. But it feels as if my eyelids are a thousand pounds each and they won't open. A soft groan escapes my lips, causing the hand in mine to pull away. I hear faint yelling and then hands are on my face and the back of my head. I groan again, expressing my discomfort.

I feel myself fading out again, but I fight it, desperately wanting to wake up. My mind starts to clear a bit and I can hear faint beeping from my left and the soft voice of a doctor to my right. I can tell she's a doctor by how serious, yet soft she sounds. I can't quite make out what she is saying, but I know it's important.

I still try to open my eyes, but they are stubborn and won't budge. I try to think back to what happened that brought me here. Everything is blank. The very last thing I remember is being at school, talking to my friends. After that... My head hurts just thinking about it. It's like it's all been erased.

I hear a door open and then heavy footsteps, muffled by carpet. A man's voice interrupts the doctor's talking. The voice triggers something in me. It's so familiar, but I can't tell who it is. He sounds upset and the doctor is trying to calm him down.

I feel hands on my face again, and this time, tingles follow the touch. My entire body relaxes and my eyelids start to flutter. My mind is clearing, but the pain is only pushed to the corners of my consciousness. My wolf seems like she wants to say something, but something stops her from speaking.

My eyes finally open, but quickly close again from the intensity of the light above me. I groan and raise a hand to cover my sensitive eyes. The light behind my eyes is gone before I can reach my hand to my face. When I open them again, it is much dimmer. The only light comes from the bright moon shining through the window on the far wall. I don't recognize my surroundings, but something about it feels familiar.

I start to glance around the room, first spotting my brother sitting next to me, his hands gripping tightly onto my right one. I then see the female doctor at the foot of the bed. One sniff tells me she is a wolf. She must be one of Artem's pack doctors.

When I finally look at the figure standing to my left, everything comes crashing back down on me. My head starts aching again as I think about all of the events prior to me waking up here. They flash in front of my eyes like pictures, giving me a clear image of what happened. Hearing my erratic laughs again gives me chills. Have I gone crazy?

Those concerned blue eyes lock with my own golden ones. I can tell he wants to speak, but he seems afraid to say anything. I turn my head back to look at my brother and see the same expression on his face. I'm surprised Phoenix has let my brother live. The thought makes me begin to panic again.

The doctor is the first one to break the silence, her voice calm. "How do you feel, Miss Hemming?" I shake my head at her question, thinking the same thing to myself. How do I feel?

She reacts to my response by taking a deep breath. "My name is Dr. Marcella Apollo. You're in Artem's infirmary."

I figured as much. It makes sense they would bring me here. I continue to look at Dr. Apollo in confusion. She takes another deep breath.
