Zariah

Court day

I was currently seated in the courtroom next to Kyle. Andrea and Aubrey were seated right behind me.

I was hella nervous but I had faith in Kyle. If she managed to get Mia out of here, I'm sure she could do the same for me.

The judge came in and took a seat at her designated place.

Kyle stood and I immediately stood up with her.

"We see each other again, Advocate Grannet." The Judge spoke.

"It's great to see you again, Judge Hatton." Kyle replied, smiling.

"So what's your appeal today?" Judge Hatton asked

"I'd like for you to rule Zariah Michaels' case as plead guilty by reason of insanity, if not, I'd like for you to rule it as self-defence ."

"Go on." Judge Hatton uttered.

"My client Zariah Michaels pleads guilty for the murder of Charison Paxton as means of self defence. She felt endangered by Charison who had a knife against Zariah's mother's throat. Andrea Michaels agreed to stand on the podium for Zariah Michaels."

I looked at mom who smiled at me. Isn't she supposed to be seated here in front with me?

"No that's okay. I have her statement right here with me." Judge Hatton stated.

There's no way, what the hell? I'm sure Kyle pulled a few strings here and there but seeing that herself and the judge are so fond of each other, I doubt she even had to.

"I also see here Zariah Michaels' medical records. Zariah you were diagnosed with Bipolar Type 1 Disorder?" She asked and looked at me.

I nodded confidently, "Yes, Your Honour."

"I looked at the autopsy report for Charison Paxton and it says here that she has 13 stab wounds. Why would you stab her so many time if it was just self defence?" She asked me.

I stood up slowly and made my way up to the podium. I was scared shitless but I practiced this speak several times back in my cell with Delilah.

"Judge Hatton, Charison Paxton stood in front of me with a knife placed against my mother's throat. She continued to provoke me by explaining that my ex-girlfriend is her next victim after she kills my mother. I know that I was wrong for stabbing her so many times but in that moment, I was angry. Just the thought of her killing the people that mean so much to me brought so much rage out of me." I explained.

I didn't want to go in too much detail because Delilah told me to keep it short and simple.

"Thank you Miss Michaels. You can go take a seat."

I walked back to my seat. I was honestly so over this.

"With what was presented here, I rule this case as guilty by reasons of insanity. Miss Michaels I hereby sentence you to 4 years in the mental facility where you previously were in the past 2 years and I also sentence you to 6 months house arrest after serving your time in the mental facility. This case is hereby closed." Judge Hatton stated.

I looked to my mom and she gave me a small smile. House arrest? Is that really necessary?

"House Arrest, Kyle?"

"Unfortunately Zariah that's what the judge sentenced you, I can't change that. I'm glad she didn't put you in prison." She stated as she gathered her things.

We walked out the court room in silence. Andrea was waiting for me outside the door and when she saw me, she rushed over to me.

"Oh baby. I'm so proud of you." She said.

"Thanx mom but I'm still gonna be put on house arrest."

"It's better than prison." She stated.

Why do they keep saying that shit. I'm not trying to be negative or anything but the only thing better than house arrest is my freedom.

I'm just glad I'll be serving with my best friend.

"Umm Kyle, thank you for everything." I said, looking at her.

"My absolute pleasure Zariah." She smiled.

I cleared my throat, "Umm Kyle, I need a little favour from you. My cellmate, Delilah, I think she needs some help. Like, professional mental help." I stated.

"Okay, I'll look into that for you." She said with a smile on her face.

She's always so happy. I wish I could be like that.

"Thank you."

She gave me a small nod then said goodbye to Andrea and I.

"Let's get you packed up and headed to the facility." Andrea said, putting her arm around my shoulder.

Here we go again.
