"I don't wanna get up," Wolfie muttered as his alarm went off, one of the few things he'd unpacked from his boxes. He buried his head further into his pillow, knowing he wasn't mentally ready for school that day and nothing would make him ready. Yet he could already hear Aldolphus up and around, going through his morning routine. He turned his head, letting one eye crack open as he listened to his brother humming a tune to the radio. "Why does he have to be in such a good mood?"
He sat up, setting his feet down before heading into the bathroom they shared, which resulted in his older brother ruffling his hair as Wolfie grabbed his toothbrush, albeit that seemed a bit useless given how he'd be eating soon enough. "Be sure to brush out your hair so it doesn't look like you have bedhead, kiddo."
"Uh-huh," he muttered, following his own routine before heading downstairs, pausing when a mug with a tiny bit of coffee was placed in front of him along with a plate of eggs, bacon, and toast—which the bacon and eggs were smiling at him making him frown. He lifted the cup and looked at his brother. "What's this?"
"I figured, given how yesterday went, you could use a bit of pick me up before school today. Anything, in particular, you want for lunch."
"Surprise me," Wolfie said, letting out a sigh, before picking at his food. He felt a hand on his forehead.
"Well, you're not running a fever."
Wolfie's frown deepened. "Were you actually looking for a reason to keep me home?"
"Well, yeah. I'm your legal guardian, but I'm not that responsible. Plus, your mental health is as important as your physical, Maddie."
"I'll keep that in mind," Wolfie said, waving his hand, shaking his head in amusement, a smile starting to creep onto his face. "And thanks. I'll be sure to eat everything on my plate."
"Unless you feel full. If you feel full, don't push it."
"Yeah. I know. I don't want to make myself sick." He started eating his food, chewing thoroughly, and even drinking the coffee before grabbing his book bag that he'd carried from upstairs and sitting next to his chair. "I'm off."
"You sure you don't want me to..."
"No. You've got work. And I've got to be independent," Wolfie said, pulling out his walkman, finding that listening to some of his favorite music put himself to ease, but as he walked, Wanda hurried over.
"Just wanted to say good morning before we got to school, and if it seems like I'm ignoring you on purpose, it's because I am."
Wolfie's mouth twisted, his nose taking in a variety of smells from the neighborhood, some new and some familiar. "That's a rather odd thing to say."
"Not if I'm avoiding you, hoping that your friends might give you the time of day."
"They've got to recognize me first," Wolfie said.
Wanda laughed. "Give it a bit, and they will."
To which—
His ears heated up, as did his cheeks as she placed a kiss on his cheek, his mouth dropping in shock, unsure of what to say in response. But then, it was Wanda after all, and their reintroduction had been a bit odd with her telling him she wanted to be his girlfriend.
"Oh," Wolfie placed a hand on his face as she hurried off, unsure of how he felt. "No, you've always liked her as well, but she's not wrong in saying that won't go over well with any of your friends, given how she treated them." He looked at his nails, letting out a sigh. "I'll need to trim them soon as they look sharp, which is a sign I'm agitated and likely to have a random transformation not tied to the full moon. Shit."
