Dusting Morning

Monday.

There was a definite feeling of excitement crawling under Wolfie's skin, wanting to come out the moment he woke up Monday morning to the smell of strong coffee, which resulted in him sitting up in bed, dust going everywhere in his room which was still decked out with items from his childhood, untouched by anyone. The dust had settled about; no life had been in the place for many a year, coming off with the slightest touch of his finger.

"You don't have to start today. It was a rather long trip yesterday," his brother muttered, standing at the counter with a mug of coffee in his hand.

"And have you make me help clean the house?" Wolfie stood on his tiptoes, his nose sniffing the smell. "That smells good."

"Oi. That's mine," his brother pulled the mug away, only for Wolfie to lean in closer. "And I wouldn't."

"Then you'll be at work today?" Wolfie looked at the mug for a cup of coffee. "I should be able to go to school then, right?"

"Not working today. Don't start until tomorrow. Wanted to make sure you were settled in first." His brother waved his hand, motioning for Wolfie to step back. "Go make yourself breakfast."

Wolfie turned his head, looking around at the kitchen, noting the place was cleaner than the rest of the house, free of the dust that plagued everything. "Did you stay up late cleaning?"

"Me?" Adolphus shook his head. "Are you sure you want to start today? The high school that is?"

"Yeah. Of course. I'm full of energy," Wolfie turned to look for ingredients for making breakfast, only to stop as he looked in the refrigerator. He stared at the empty fridge before peeking around the door. "Hey. How can I may breakfast if there's nothing to cook?"

"There's cereal."

"With no milk. Yuck."

His brother continued drinking his coffee before making a circular motion with his hand. "Here."

"You're letting me have coffee?"

"Like, an inch of what's left of mine."

Wolfie let out a laugh, snatching the cup away. "That's the best part!"

"Weirdo," Adolphus said as Wolfie chugged down the coffee. "Well, if you're already packed for school, we're up early enough that we can stop somewhere for breakfast."

"Does that mean..."

"Nope. You've had enough caffeine for the day with what I've let you have. If you have any more, you'll be bouncing off the walls at school as you're obviously jittery enough as it is. But, at least you'll be awake for school."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Wolfie let out a laugh. "I know I can be a bit hyperactive..."

"A bit?" His brother shook his head. "You really don't remember getting up in the middle of the night and cleaning the entire kitchen, do you?"

"Me?" Wolfie's eyes blinked, his head tilting. "Wouldn't I have started with my own room? It's covered in dust, which makes it hard to sleep, what with all the stuff coming out of the mattress."

"I see. Tell you what. I'll see to that today, but also stop and get some groceries. Lot's of healthy food for a growing young werewolf," his brother said, smiling at him. "And—yeah, let's get going so we can get some actual real food in you."

"You too!" Wolfie laughed, grabbing his backpack. Stepping outside, he saw that the trailer they'd packed boxes into was on one side of the driveway and his brother's truck on the other, everything unpacked from the back of the truck into the garage. There was a slight smell of moister lingering, making his nose wrinkle.
