"Alright guys, we're here!" Deacon called as he and Annie were ready for some adult time. The car was loud as the two younger Kays were singing to a Justin Beiber song. Matthew quietly played his video game as older daughter Lyla was in her own world with her cellphone. Annie's parents were so excited they were waiting in the front porch. They had prepared popcorn and candy, set up a giant screen in the back patio and filled up the pool for the little ones. As the car rolled into the front garage space, the two eager youngsters opened the car doors.

"Hey! Wait you two!" called Annie as the older boy had detached his younger sister's security straps and were both running towards their grandparents. Deacon just shook his head and smirked. She turned to Deacon and smiled, as she unbuckled her seat belt and went for the bags in the back.

"Hey Matt! Turn that thing off from time to time, alright?" he called as the boy ignored him completely. Matthew wore his biggest gamer headphones, as he continued to hunt and kill enemies in COD. Those headphones cost more than every video game he owned! He wouldn't even let anyone touch them. Deacon wont ever forget how much he suffered paying for them!

Matthew looked up and as soon as the car parked, he automatically took off his belt and got off the car. He went towards his grandparents much calmer than his younger siblings.

"Ok?" Deacon said, raising an eyebrow, not appreciating being ignored. He turned his attention to Lyla, who had been quiet the entire ride there, about 45 minutes.

"Hey, Lyla?" he called from the driver's side. She ignored him completely, getting out the car. She didn't even bother to turn around and look at him. "Love you!"

He was surprised, so he looked through the rear view mirror towards Annie who was still unloading bags. "Hey, you know what's up with her? She's being rather quiet lately. Wouldn't even eat dinner with us yesterday at that Italian place she loved so much."

"Must be boy troubles." Annie said as she shot him a disappointed look from the back. "Haven't noticed her talking in the phone with that boy she went out with a couple of times these last couple of weeks."

"Oh...that's too bad." he said as Annie closed the back door. Annie finished with the bags as her dad came in to help. Both elderly waved at Deacon who remained in the car. Annie then came around to the front and opened the passenger door.  She called and her parents waved goodbye.

"Yeah, well...you know how teenagers are!" she said as they both waved good bye and got into the car. "Tried talking to her, but you know she's been shelled for a while now." she buckled her belt, and Deacon put it on drive.

"I'll try to talk to her again. Hopefully she'll open up over ice scream."

"You know that always worked!"

"Yeah!" he said as she placed her hand on his shoulder. "Ready for a nice outing?"

She turned towards him, and nodded. "Absolutely!"

The day was gorgeous. Almost 10am, with birds creating an orchestra of beautiful chants, temperature just perfect, and the breeze spectacular. They couldn't ask for a better setting for their first date in months. Going out socially had become much more difficult once Annie enrolled in college courses, and Deacon took on overtime with SWAT Academy. The chief had requested and funded for three new officers to be promoted and 20 Squad to direct the efforts with recruitment. Hondo decided to step back and allow Deacon to lead that assignment, stepping back with just a supporting role. This proved a wise move, for Deacon had no idea how much work it was to complete all the extensive training the recruits had to go through. In the end, Deacon hated Hondo for it, and that was the reason why Hondo and Nichelle invited them to a double date with them this day. Deacon remembered that day:

"You screwed me, Hondo. I hate you, really!" Deacon said kidding, as he slapped Hondo in the shoulder. They had finished a long day at HQ. Three intense training sessions that drove Deacon crazy because he had to direct all three, getting disappointing results from his top recruits. Nora did horribly in the Climbing and Rappelling Training, while Cabrera couldn't even complete the Fast Chase repetitions and Powler broke all protocols in the Suspect Apprehension drills. It was a disaster, for sure!

"Aight, Deacon. I threw you a bone...but I'ma make it up to youb. On Sunday, how bout you and Annie join us for a nice lunch? My treat! Just like good ol' times!"

"It better be. I'm not bring my wallet!" Deacon said as Hondo laughed it out.

So...here they were. Heading to that soul food restaurant Nichelle was dying to try. She was so excited she actually called Annie to talk about it, and got the latter excited as well. It was a new restaurant, at top floor of the Stella Hotel, downtown. For its opening, the chef  and owner promised a special menu, surprise gifts and free live music featuring a local jazz group.

Deacon and Annie held hands, as the traffic moved slow down Arthur Boulevard, just three miles from the hotel. Deacon's phone vibrated, so he answered the call.

"Yo, Deac, we got slowed down a bit by the traffic in Arthur Boulevard, but we about 5 minutes out. Where you at?" Hondo said, as his voice resonated through the car. Deacon had programmed the phone with the car's radio.

"What a coincidence!" he said as he turned to look at Annie, both grinning, "We're stuck in the same traffic jam. You know what's happening in this side of town?"

"From the looks of it, a lot of cars with dogs, kennels and kids."

"Oh, yeah, wasn't that dog competition this week?" Annie interrupted

"Hey Annie!" Nichelle greeted, "And yes. It's the 100th edition, so you know it's about to be grand."

"They've closed off a couple of lanes in the boulevard and taken up the mass Convention Center downtown and three hotels. Who would've known dogs got the royal treatment, huh?" Hondo said slightly annoyed

"Better not talk like that in front of Chris. It'll get her started!" Deacon said with a smirk

"Yeah, well, I ain't a hater but I think it's a little bit ridiculous. You know?" Hondo added still annoyed

"How's she doing, by the way?" Nichelle asked humorously

"Yeah, how are the new parents?" Annie added with a slight giggle

"It ain't hit me yet, man. I don't know what to say. D?" Hondo said joining the ladies with a slight giggle

"Well, hopefully she hasn't killed Street ,yet...and the kid has settled down with them. I heard the counselor repeat several times the kid has a tendency to up and leave. So..."

"Yeah, it's crazy." Hondo agreed

"Hey! Traffic is moving better now. Well catch you guys in the entrance of the restaurant. Ok?"

"Yes, sir!" called Hondo, as he hung up.

Deacon maneuvered his way through the packed lanes, until reaching the hotel entrance.

"I'm really excited about this." Annie said as she tucked on Deacon's arm. She came closer to him, and with a very slight move, he turned his head and gave her a soft kiss in the forehead.

"I'm glad we took this time off. Work has been non stop."

"Yeah, and with my school and the kids, we haven't had time for ourselves. So, this is a well deserved break." she said with a sweet smile, leaning on him

"It is indeed! I'm just grateful everything is going great."

"Amen!"
