CHAPTER ZERO.
IN LOVING MEMORY OF...
MAELANIHer head throbbed in an extensive pain. She's been crying for the past two weeks, dreading the day she'd finally had to face the fire before her.
Rio sobbed loudly next to her two kids, holding the casket with the free hand she had. Friends from all around came to help her away from the casket, as she screamed and cried for her late husband.
Miles believed that now his father was gone, it was his responsibility to take care of the two most important people in his life — Rio and Lani. He could mourn, cry, sob, when he got to his room, and everyone was asleep.
Lani just couldn't cry.
She held herself together. It was like her tears had a drought, she couldn't muster up a single one, as they had all been used in the past two weeks. The sounds of the rain hitting her black umbrella soothed her, as she thought about the lost of her father.
Jefferson Davis was a man of honor. His work in protecting the roads of Brooklyn brought quiet streets and peaceful kickbacks. He was truly a man who cared for the well-being of his neighborhood. The man that killed her father was put immediately into jail after the trial, thanks to Jeff's co-worker, Captain George Stacy.
The repast came up next, people gathered to celebrate the life of the officer. Rio and Lani helped serve the food the caterer made for the occasion. Lani's ears grew dim and numb at the sound of the same sentence.
"I'm sorry for your loss."
"Everything's gonna be alright."
As of right now? No. Everything was not going to be alright.
As if he could sense her deep in thought, George Stacy sat next to Lani, looking at her with a solemn face. "How you holding up, kiddo?" he asked softly, the chatters of the other people in the room low as well.
She just looked down, fiddling with her fingers as she shrugged slightly. "I'll manage, I guess." she replied, her voice raspy from her lack of talking at all that day. "Dad was always in Queens, he was never home to begin with. This is just a little deeper than him leaving for the day. He...he's gone forever now." she felt her eyes well for the first time that day.
George nodded, sadly looking to the floor, before looking back at Lani, a soft smile on his face. "Your speech at the church was beautiful. Your father would be proud." he complimented, trying to lighten her mood.
She doesn't reply, only scoffing softly, not having the strength to mutter a 'thank you'.
First, it was Uncle Aaron, now it was her dad. She can't do anymore funerals. Anymore send-offs.
She prayed silently for mercy, on her heart.
