CHAPTER ONE.

FRESH SLATE

THREE MONTHS LATER..

MAELANI SAT IN HER MOTHER'S car, a tote bag around her arm as she looked at the doors of Midtown High School, watching as students walked in with their friend groups and such.

"Cariño this would be the part that you get out the car for school and I drive away." Rio joked, sipping the cup of Starbucks coffee she had in her hand, before setting it down in the cup holder.

Lani rolled her eyes at her mother. "I don't understand why we had to move, mom." she complained, a slight whine coming from her mouth as she stared ahead. She then leaned her head on the headrest of her seat. "Me and Miles were doing fine at Visions."

"That school is just one of the other great schools you can get into." Rio chuckled at her daughter's whining. "You know why we had to move baby. We have no more family in Brooklyn. The Stacy's are our best bet." Rio sighed as her daughter didn't speak, looking ahead with a look she couldn't define. "In all fairness, I gave you an extra day to prepare. You already missed your first day." she chuckled, gaining a laugh out of her daughter. "Miles got a head start, he's in Robotics, met this kid named Ganke. Let's hope he doesn't try to get kicked out of this school."

Maelani laughed at her mother, this one more kind-hearted than tight. Rio continued. "It's a fresh slate, new beginnings, after all that's happened." Rio sadly smiled. "We need this."

Lani nodded in understanding, trusting her mother's words. "Okay." she offered her a smile. "I'll ride home with Gwen tonight."

"Tell Miles i'll be here after Robotics."

Lani hopped out of the car, now in a slightly better mood, walking into the school, clutching her tote bag as she heard her mom pull off.

AFTER A FEW HOURS, Lani had finally gotten use to her class numbers. She looked down at her school map, which she circled and numbered all of her class periods. As she walked with her head down, she bumped into a shoulder harshly, making her wince. She turned around. "Excuse you?"

A broad boy turned around, his cocky demeanor already being seen. He kissed his teeth, chuckling. "Maybe watch where you're going next time, freshie." The two boys beside him laughed loudly.

Lani scrunched her eyes, walking closer. "If you can see me coming, how about not being a dick, and moving out of the way?" she tilted her head as her words left her mouth. She watched as the group quieted down, their faces going straight.

"Don't let her say that, Flash, come on." the boy muttered beside him.

Flash raised his eyebrow with a scoff. "You know, you got a lot of mouth for a freshman. You new kids need to learn your place."

"This mouth, is genius. A word you can't even identify." she sneered, a small smirk on her face. "And for your information, i'm a senior, dumbass." she walked away from the boy, looking back down at her schedule paper.

Before she could really begin reading, she bumped into a lighter body this time, making her groan. "Oh my god." she turned around being met with a brown-haired boy, sighing. "Please don't tell me you're an asshole too."

The boy's eyes widened, shaking his head quickly. "Oh, uh, no, i'd think I was pretty okay." he replied.

Lani nodded, smiling at him. "Great, then I'm sorry for bumping into you, this school is huge and confusing." she laughed with the boy, his awkward stance making him cute. Lani held out her hand. "I'm Maelani, you can call me Lani."

He hesitated, before reaching out, shaking her hand. "Peter. Peter Parker." He let go, smiling softly at her. "You need some help with the schedule?"

Lani laughed softly. "Hell yeah, i'm so lost it's ridiculous." Her smile brought comfort to Peter quickly, it was like they were already destined to meet one another.

He smiled with her, rolling his eyes before taking her paper playfully, looking at it himself. "I have the same class right now, you can come with me." he walked down the hall, Lani chasing after him.

"Can I have it back?"

"Nope."
