Jaxon sighed nervously as he stared at the tall-looking gates of his new home. Black iron curled and twisted to form various patterns, meeting at the top creating the head of a lion. Jaxon inhaled deeply, glancing around at the tall walls on either side of the gate. As he looked behind him, he saw a lone roadway submerged in darkness hidden by the thick forestry on either side of the road.
"You look nervous," a sly voice said.
Jaxon flinched, turning to the slender man angrily. He relaxed his stance as he saw the smug expression on Lyron's face. "I'm not nervous, just cautious," his boyish voice said softly. Lyron narrowed his eyes at the boy, correction, man. He saw so much potential in him but Jaxon was ignorant of the fact.
He walked towards him and squeezed his shoulder tightly. "This is just a permanent placement but it would be nice if you put in the extra effort to like it and learn something useful," Lyron stated, handing him a black card with a red lion on it.
Jaxon smiled and accepted it, motioning for Lyron to look at the gate. "Lionsgate," he said softly, watching his friend closely. Lyron stared at the gate confused when a large smile suddenly appeared on his face.
"You see. You have nothing to worry about. You are funny," he started fumbling with Jaxon's collar. "A little between cute and handsome," he muttered under his breath, causing Jaxon to roll his eyes. "But you'll get there, you still have time," he finished with a frown.
Jaxon nodded. He gulped and reluctantly raised the card high. There was a loud crack and then the gates began to creak open. A bright light shined from beyond the gate and Jaxon braced himself. It was just a boarding school, he had nothing to worry about. He would lay low and go undetected, as he had done in high school. He could survive, it was what he had done for the majority of his life. He was no stranger to loneliness.
Lyron inhaled slowly, gripping Jaxon's shoulder from his position behind him. He leaned closer to Jaxon's ear. "Also, there may be other supernatural creatures attending this institution," he said leaning back. Lyron stood at an impressive height of 6ft 5, 5 inches taller than Jaxon.
Jaxon furrowed his brow. "But you said that there would only be humans. I forgot my masking potion," he said his heart pounding in his chest. The minute he walked through those gates he would be sensed. Laying low would instantly become a distant dream.
"Yes, I may have told a little white lie.”
“Look, you can't spend the rest of your life cooped up in a bubble. You have to get out of your shell and enjoy life, get a girlfriend, and make friends. Your time is limited and that’s the hard truth," Lyron said turning Jaxon around to look him in his violet eyes.
Jaxon nodded. He was being hunted and at any time, his enemies could get to him and kill him. A girlfriend was farfetched, since as Lyron said he was cute, not handsome and he wasn't sure if he wanted to let someone in just yet.
"See you when I see you," he said to Lyron, who nodded with that he turned and walked through the gates. They closed immediately as he walked through. He glanced back at the black gates.
"You must be Joshua," a high-pitched monotone voice of a woman, brought Jaxon's attention to a tall strawberry blonde-haired woman with pale skin. She was dressed in pants and a blouse and low heels. Her red stained lips were pursed in a permanent frown.
"Actually, I go by Jaxon," he corrected.
"Jackson, I don't see that here," she said flipping through her notepad, in the artificial light of the outdoor bulbs. Jaxon wondered why she didn't just invite him inside.
