Streets POV
The ambulance arrived a few minutes later and we drove to the hospital with blue lights and sirens.
Once there, we were already awaited by doctors and nurses. It was a huge crowd and finally a nurse dragged me out of the treatment room.
"Sir, please let the doctors do their work!" she was yelling at me.
"But I need to see her! I need to know how she is!" I tried to push past her but she stopped me.
"That won't do her any good right now either. Staying outside is the best thing you can do for her right now."
"You don't understand!"
"Do you want to explain it to me?" the nurse asked, leading me to a bench.
Even though I knew it was an attempt to distract me, I took the chance to confide in someone. We sat down and I began to tell:
"The story is so crazy. Until two weeks ago, we lived together in my apartment and were together. But then I made a big mistake... I saw a picture where she appeared to be kissing someone. I didn't believe her that the guy was kissing her and I broke up with her. I even kicked her out. Then as it turned out tonight, the guy kept stalking her and hitting her. Tonight was the first time I saw it....
Long story short, the guy ended up in jail and when I went to talk to her in her apartment, she vomited blood and collapsed... After she told me she loved me." I paused and ran my hands through my hair. "This is all my fault! If I had believed her, or at least taken better care of her, none of this would have happened. She's here because of me, I'll never forgive myself!" I stared at the door to the treatment room where Chris was probably fighting for her life right now.
"Hey, you absolutely cannot blame yourself for anything right now, do you hear me? If she has forgiven you there is no reason to! This woman loves her and that's why you need to be strong for her right now, you understand?" the nurse asked.
I nodded and let her words sink in.
"Tell me about her." She offered.
"Her name is Chris. She always says what she thinks, is very strong and doesn't let anyone tell her how to be. I have known her for 5 years and she has always been there for me and made sure I keep my job and I don't mess up.
We are both officers at LAPD SWAT and our entire team can always rely on Chris 100%. She's had to hold her own quite a bit as the only woman there, but she's almost earned more respect than our boss." I had to smile at the thought. This nurse really knew how to talk to people.
"May I ask what your name is?" I asked.
"My name is Claire Reynolds. Your girlfriend seems like a great person, Mr...?"
"Jim Street. Yes, she is!"
We talked about Chris for a while longer, then Claire went to see one of her patients.
After a while, I asked several doctors where Chris was and what her condition was, but no one gave me any information. Two hours later, I slumped down on a metal chair in frustration and called Hicks in desperation.
"Officer Street, what can I do for you?" he reported.
"I'm at a loss. No one will give me any information and I don't know how she's doing!" it gushed.
"How who is doing? What's going on with you? You sound all messed up!"
"Chris...she's in the hospital. When I went to check on her she threw up...with blood and then she passed out. I called the ambulance and she's here now, but the doctors haven't told me anything about her condition or where she is for three hours. I can't do this, I..."
