Kanon Matsubara: an extremely shy and nervous girl who has a habit of going "fuee~" when talking. Her and I have been friends for as long as I can remember. I've always been the one to stand up and look out for her. To her, I must've been like an overprotective older brother.
Here, I waited. The plan for today was to meet at a park to hang out. Better to spend this hot summer day outside than waste it indoors. Today, I would finally break the news that I've been procrastinating on telling her for weeks. My family and I would be moving overseas next month.
"Fuee~ sorry I'm late!" Kanon said as she approached me sitting on a park bench.
Looking at her, I couldn't believe the person she's become this past year. She had always been one of the most introverted people I knew. How anyone convinced her to join a band and perform on stage is beyond me. But, I must say that I am very proud of her for breaking out of her shell.
"Don't worry about it," I responded, "Let's go for a walk."
"Okay, that sounds nice." She smiled.
"Do you want to get some ice cream? It'll be my treat."
"Okay, but only because you're paying."
We walked up to an ice cream stand in the park. In the past, Kanon found it so difficult talking to strangers that whenever we'd go shopping, I would have to do all the talking for her. Now, after she's joined her band and became more bold, she's been able to order on her own, albeit her shyness stills shines through as she speaks.
"H-hello. Can I get vanilla in a cone?" She asked in a quiet voice as she averted her gaze.
"Sure thing. And what would you like?" The man turned to me and asked.
"I'll have chocolate."
"Alright, that will be six hundred yen."
I handed him the money and grabbed both of our ice cream cones from him before handing Kanon her cone.
"Fue~ I stuttered when I spoke to him." She said.
"Don't worry about it. I don't think he even noticed. I'm really proud of how far you've come." I patted her on the head.
The two of us walked around and enjoyed our ice cream together. While I put on the appearance of having a great time, I was feeling anxious and nervous.
"C'mon, Y/N, tell her now." I thought to myself, "Stop procrastinating. She needs to know sooner than later."
"I-is something wrong, Y/N?" She asked with a concerned look.
"Kanon, there's something I need to tell you."
"What is it?"
"Next month, my family and I are moving away. I won't be in Japan anymore."
"W-what?! Why? Why are you leaving?"
"My father got a job in America. My parents decided it would be best if we all moved with him and-" I stopped stalking. Kanon was trying her hardest to conceal the tears falling down her face.
"I'm so sorry, Kanon. I don't have a say in this. The truth is that I don't want to leave."
"T-then don't leave!" She sobbed, "Don't leave me all alone!"
I wrapped my arms around her and gave her a warm hug. She hugged back really tightly. Who knew that Kanon had this much strength? I'm surprised that Kanon, the shy girl who was always conscious about not being the center of attention in public, so openly cried to her hearts content here. Around us, people were staring and giving us looks. I didn't care about that. All I cared about was trying to comfort my childhood friend that was devastated by the news that I had given her.
