3: Accepting the Mission

The next morning, both Lucy and Tim woke up feeling uneasy. There was an unsettling feeling at the pit of both of their stomachs. Knowing the way their last conversation ended, they knew there would be a little tension, but they both tried to get ready for the day the best way they could and ignore it and move on.

It was time for roll call, it was the first time that Tim and Lucy were going to see each other since their last conversation. As always, Tim was standing next to Grey and Lucy was sitting next to Nolan. Neither one of them daring to look at the other.

It was a usual day in the roll call room. Nothing exciting. Grey was talking when Nolan noticed that Lucy was zoned out, so he tapped on the table and asked, "Hey Lucy, you okay?"

"Yeah, just didn't sleep much last night."

"Is everything okay?"

"Yeah. I'm just preparing for my UC mission."

"Oh yeah, that's right! Don't worry too much about it, you're going to be amazing!" He whispered excitedly.

"I wish other people thought the same." She mumbled to herself as she looked up and saw Tim peering in her direction.

"Huh?" Nolan questioned.

"I said, thank you." Lucy lied.

Roll call came to an end and Grey wished everyone a safe shift and sent everyone on their different paths. Lucy was about to go get the war bags to set up her and Tim's shop when Tim called after her, saying, "Officer Chen, you're going to be riding with Harper today, Nolan you're riding with me."

"Yes sir." Both Nolan and Lucy replied.

Lucy walked out of the roll call room, turned to Grey's office, started walking towards his office and then paused. She felt eyes on her. She turned to see that Tim was looking in her direction with a hint of sadness in his eyes. She wasn't able to meet his eyes, so she continues to Grey's office and knocks on the door and says, "Sergeant Grey, a word?"

"Of course! Come in and close the door."

As she was closing the door, she noticed that Tim inched closer to Grey's office. Still not taking his eyes off her, she closes the door. "I accept. I want the UC mission. I need this UC mission."

"Great! You already know the drill. Get your personal life in check. You don't know how long you're going to be under."

"Understood sir." Lucy said assertively.

"Okay, well then, congratulations!"

"Thank you, sir." Lucy replied before exiting the office.

Nyla was outside of Grey's office waiting for her. She asked, "Everything okay?"

"Never better." Lucy replied smiling to herself.

"Okay then. Let's get going. You ready to go?"

"Yeah, I'm ready."

The two were walking to their shop when Lucy finally met the gaze of Tim's peering eyes.

The day was quiet. Nyla and Lucy made a few arrests, but for the most part, they got the pleasure of staying in the shop all day. While driving around, Nyla tried to make small talk because she noticed that Lucy had been strangely quiet almost the entire duration of their shift. Nyla asked about the UC mission and Lucy perked up and explained how excited she was about the mission. She loved doing UC work. Nyla then expressed her congratulations to her, but she also expressed how ready Lucy needed to be. "I'm proud of you Lucy! But I can't begin to tell how essential it is for you to get your personal life in order. I know they probably already told you that, but it needs the extra emphasis."
