5: It's Been a While

The mission had been going on for a while. It had been a little more than six months. Everything was going the way that it was planned to go. Nova was doing great. Making connections with all the right people. At first, some of the connections that she was making had become suspicious of her because they thought they had seen her in a different professional capacity, but she assured them that they had not. While Nova was excelling, Lucy on the other hand, was struggling. Lucy missed home. She missed everything and everyone. When she started this mission, she didn't believe that it would take this long. For the last six months she had been isolated from everything and everyone she loved, and she was slowly starting to go insane.

In those six months, Mid-Wilshire had been progressing. New rookies had come in. Nyla was promoted to detective. Angela was becoming a better detective than she already was. Nolan had become a TO. Sergeant Grey was still kicking, and Tim had developed so much as a sergeant. Finding his footing. Not only were they thriving professionally, but they were all thriving personally. Nyla was preparing to have a baby girl with her newlywed husband James. Angela and Wesley had finally gotten the hand of parenthood. Nolan and Bailey were doing amazing, and Tim had gotten into a relationship with Ashley. Everyone was living their best lives.

It had been months since anyone, except Nyla, had heard from Lucy. Everyone was sitting one day, having lunch when Nolan asked, "Hey Nyla, how's Lucy holding up?"

"She's good. She misses home, a lot." She said as she took a bite of her French fry.

Tim's head popped up as soon as he heard Lucy's name. He hadn't talked to her since her first night in when she called. Was she okay? Was she safe? Was she hurt? All kinds of questions flooded his brain, but he didn't say anything, he just continued to listen to the conversation. "That's good, is she having fun?"

"In some ways, but in others, she's going insane."

"As in?" Angela pitched in.

"There's no consistency right now with all the adrenaline she has. There are moments where the adrenaline is so high, and then in the next moment nothing is going on and she's just sitting in her apartment watching true crime documentaries."

Tim smiled to himself. Watching true crime documentaries was one of Lucy's favorite things to do. They had all sat for a little while longer, but before they knew it, it was time to get back to work. The rest of their shift went by swimmingly and at the end of it, everyone returned to their respective places.

Later on in the evening, Lucy was trying to get some sleep, but for some reason, she couldn't shut her mind off. She looked over to the box of burners that was in the corner, pondering is she should pick one up and call back home just to do a quick check in. It would on take a second on the phone for her to get a grip on her sanity because she was slowly, but surely losing it. She turned over to the other side because she knew that those phones were for emergency purposes only and she needed to save them for just that. She had been given regular phone that she used daily, but she didn't want to risk calling anyone from home unless her phone was being traced.

She tried to forget the thought by getting up to go make a warm glass of milk. It was something that her mother always did for her when she was a child. She sat on the couch while she burned a candle. She looked at the clock, it was a little after two in the morning. The milk wasn't making her tired, but she was enjoying it.

She had been sitting on the couch for almost an hour and she was still as energetic as she was when she left her bed. She finished her cup of milk and put her cup in the sink and then proceeded to go lay down. She laid down and made herself as comfortable as possible, but she still found herself looking at the box of burners again. She hadn't talked to anyone except Nyla for the last six months, and she thought one call wouldn't hurt. She ultimately decided to give into her thoughts and grab one of the burners. When she laid back down, she was still contemplating whether she should actually call or not. But it was like secondhand nature kicked in and before she knew it, she had dialed Tim's number. While instantly regretting her decision, the phone was ringing, and she just laid there with her hand on her head. It was too late to turn back now, Tim answered "Hello."

"Hey Tim." Lucy said with a small smile on her face.

Tim knew immediately who it was and began to smile to himself. "Hey Luce. How are you? I heard you've been bored."

"Yeah, you have no idea." Lucy said as she let out a small chuckle.

"Nothing exciting happening?" Tim questioned.

"Not really. Patrol was more exciting than this."

They both shared a laugh, followed by a comfortable silence. Lucy heard movement coming from the living room. She immediately went to hide her box of burners and grabbed her gun. Tim was still on the phone, thinking that they were enjoying a comfortable silence. The noises were growing closer to her bedroom. She moved into a spot where she was crouched and gun was locked and loaded, she then heard Tim ask, "Luce, you okay?"

"Someone is in my apartment. Can't really talk right now. Shh. But stay on the phone, please?" She said in a whispered tone.

Tim didn't say anything, but he sat up swiftly in his bed and became alert. Tim moving so quickly scared Ashley while she was sleeping. She woke up and asked "Babe you, okay? What's wrong?"

In a sweet tone, Tim replied "I'm fine go back to sleep babe."

Lucy may not have had the phone directly up to her ear, but she definitely heard that. She immediately started asking questions in her head. "Babe? Who is babe? When did Tim get a girlfriend? And since when did they live together? She was so distracted that she didn't hear men coming up behind her. They grabbed her and she began kicking a screaming, but they stuck a needle in her neck to silence her.

Tim was still on the phone saying, "Lucy? Lucy? Lucy, I heard screaming? Lucy are you still there?" He didn't get a response, so he started screaming "LUCY! LUCY! PLEASE ANSWER ME!"

But it was too late. The men had already come and grabbed her. She was gone.
