The crowd roared, shaking the seats of the small football stadium. There was only one man they were all screaming for, number 61. Layla's best friend Shane Carter, as his legs sprinted across the field faster than Layla thought should be possible. The players on the other team tried to get in his way, dropping low to tackle him and pin him down.
But Layla and everyone who had ever seen Shane play knew that was never going to happen.
He was a machine on the field. And Layla would bet everything she owned that he was grinning from ear to ear as he let the opposition get in close only to turn on his real speed.
Gold and black painted faces held their breath as Shane neared the line. Layla stood taller on her tip toes, a smile of her own on her lips.
A step from the touchdown line Shane stopped and turned around. His hand over his helmet like he was looking really far into the distance as he faced the field and the approaching players.
Before anyone could get close he leant forward in a mocking bow and took the final step over the line to score.
Show off.
Layla laughed, watching Shane get swarmed by his teammates a second later. Coach didn't look so happy with the show.
"It's like he's not even trying. I thought this team was meant to be good." Layla's friend Georgie- GG for short- leant closer to Layla motioning toward the exhausted looking team their college was playing against.
If you could call this slaughter a game.
"They're meant to be the best. But I think we just took that title." Layla mused.
"You mean Shane did. I don't think he even needs the rest of them running around out there to win."
She quickly added, "Don't tell him I said that, he doesn't need any more more help inflating his ego." GG rolled her eyes, gold glitter and black eye shadow on her cheeks matching Layla's own face paint.Georgie pulled out her phone to check her messages and Layla scanned the team for the hot players.
Her eyes slowly drifting back to where Shane stood holding a bottle of water above his head to cool himself down.
"So you going to the after party tonight?" GG drew Layla's focus back to her.
"I'm not sure." Layla looked down at her scruffy converses with a sigh.
"It's exactly the place I'd see Adam and I just don't want to deal with all that.""It's been three weeks since you two broke up, don't let him continue to ruin your life when he's not even your boyfriend." GG scolded in a stern voice that reminded Layla of her old high school teacher.
"I know."
"And anyway you have big strong Shane Carter to play bodyguard for the night." The smirk GG shot her was wicked. Layla rolled her eyes.
He would do it though- play bodyguard. If Layla asked, Shane would stay by her side all night long. Just like she would for him. They were best friends after all, it was in the unspoken BFF contract.
But after they no doubt won this game Layla would feel so guilty if she kept Shane from having fun and made her best friend as miserable as her.
No, she didn't need him all the time. She was strong and independent and she could be a big girl handling her own shit.
"I don't want to ruin his night. He'll want to have a good time and he should be with his team. And besides he might even find a girl to hookup with, I'll never hear the end of it if I cock block him." Beside her, GG gave Layla a strange look, her perfectly groomed eyebrows raised.
"And besides I have you." Layla grabbed her friend's arm and smiled sweetly.
GG only gave her another look that said 'mmhmm'.
It was nearly the end of halftime when Layla noticed Shane looking at the crowd.
His gaze concentrated hard on each row. Filtering every face moving lower and lower until his eyes met Layla's and that stupid grin spread across his face. Those dimples making an appearance.
With too much energy he made his way to the edge of the stands where Layla and GG sat one row up from the front.
"You really should start wearing my jersey to these things so I can spot you easier." He said with a nod of his head toward Layla's tight black crop top and jeans, much like everyone else's outfits.
Layla wrinkled her nose at him, "That smelly oversized thing, no thanks."
Wearing a players jersey was kind of a girlfriend thing. And even though she knew he didn't mean it that way, It would be way too weird.
"Carter, stop flirting with your- not girlfriend, girlfriend and get your ass back here!" Coach yelled from the bench, looking between Layla and Shane like a worn out dad.
Shane and Layla had both corrected everyone enough times about the fact that they definitely were not dating, that it was finally starting to sink in.
Just best friends for life. A ride or die kinda friendship.
As he turned to leave, Shane threw Layla a wink; to which she made a disgusted gagging motion; he smiled and blew her a kiss; Layla back handed the invisible gesture away as if swatting a fly.
With his hand over his 'wounded' chest he sighed in defeat and nodded an acknowledgment toward GG before he headed to the bench.
A few feet away he looked back, remembering something.
"Oh yeah, you know how I was meant to go grocery shopping this morning?" He yelled.
"Please tell me we have food at home! You promised you wouldn't forget this time!" Layla's finger pointed accusingly in Shane's direction, meaning she was dead serious.
"Pfft, of course not." Shane scratched his head, ruffling up his hair as his eyes circled away from Layla's glare and then back.
"Oreos for dinner?" He grinned and sent her two thumbs up before running to the bench like the scaredy cat he was.Ugh! She was going to kill him!
