I expected Chris to call me back or text or even show up after I hung up on him, but he didn't- proving to me that I made the right choice. Noah came home a little bit afterward and we had dinner together before I allowed him to watch TV before going to bed.
"Mommy?" I turn my head to see a sleepy Noah in the hallways the next morning. He's rubbing his eyes while dressed in his Toy Story pajama set. "Why am I not at daddy's house?" He asks, walking over to me with his bare feet. I put the knife away I was using to spread cream cheese on my bagel and walked over to him.
"How would you feel about spending the whole day with mommy?" I asked him.
"But-But I have school." He stuttered.
"What if we went to the park instead of school today?" I asked, smiling big.
"Really?" His big brown eyes lit up.
"Yup."
"Yay!" He jumped up and down, making me giggle.
"Are you hungry? Do you want breakfast?" I asked him. "You can have anything you want."
"Anything?" His lips begins to spread into a wide grin.
"Anything." I confirm.
"Then I want...Cereal!" Noah exclaims.
"Cereal it is!" I agreed before I took his hand and lead him over to the table. Noah had himself a seat and waited anxiously for me to fix him a bowl of his favorite cereal, Frosted Flakes. I never really gave him cereal when we was with me, because cereal wasn't really breakfast and his favorites were the ones with way too much sugar. But if I was going to be a bad parent today but making him skip school, then I was going to throw out the most important meal of the day out of the window and say to hell with it.
While Noah ate his cereal and watched an early re-run of a spongebob episode, the doorbell rang. My heart lurched at the thought of it being Chris; I did my best to not think of him after I ended things with him on the phone. I didn't know what I was going to do if it was him. Slowly, I walk over to the door and look into the peephole. The guy standing outside of my door wasn't Chris, but it was still surprising.
"What are you doing here Trent?" I asked, staring up at him.
"Well Noah never made it to his school so they called me and you weren't answering your phone." He explains.
"Oh. My phone is on vibrate in my room."
"So what's going on? Where's Noah?" He asks, taking a step into the house after I stood aside to let him in.
"He's in the living room."
"Daddy?" Noah's little voice was heard before I saw him running over to Trent.
"How's it going little man?" Trent asked with wrapping his arms around Noah.
"Mommy's taking me to the park!" Noah tells Trent excitedly.
Trent looks at me expectantly. "She is?"
I nod my head. "I needed a rookie day." I shrugged. "Besides, I haven't been spending much time with him lately."
"Daddy, you want to come?" Noah asks, his tone hopeful.
"I don't know if mommy would be okay with that." Trent says as he runs his hands through his son's curls before he looks at me.
"Can daddy come too mommy? Please!" Noah begs.
"Sure." I smile.
"Yay!" He jumps up and down while grinning ear to ear at the both of us. I knew this would make him happy; it's been forever since the three of us did something together.
"Don't you have work?" I asked Trent.
"You're not the only one who can call out." He smirks at me, making me giggle.
Daddy, you want to watch Spongebob with me?" Noah asked, already tugging on Trent's arm to pull him into the living room.
"You know I'm always down to watch Spongebob with you little man." Trent agrees and allows Noah to drag him into the living room.
"If you could get him ready to go that would be great," I say to Trent, following after them.
"Okay."
"I'm going to get ready then," I say to him before I walk away.
