My hood fell off of my face as I dashed away to the nearest building with a fire escape and began climbing it. I could hear both heroes following close behind. I knew Kai would use this as his chance to get away. If that meant my sister didn't have to see me arrested, so be it.

Living on the streets alone these last two years had taught me a lot. I knew the quickest way to get anywhere in this city; without being seen. I could see the green-haired one was following me, leaping over the buildings just as easily. There was green lightning wrapped around him as he vaulted after me. I couldn't see the blonde but I was sure he was following as well.

Landing in an alley I looked up and watched as the greenie passed by above, unaware. I leaned against the wall of the alley and took a second to catch my breath. I was going to wait until they got far enough away before heading to my hideout.

"Now that wasn't very nice." A voice spoke from directly next to where my head was resting. I jumped with a very undignified yelp, fell to the ground, and stared.

There was a face sticking out of the wall.

More specifically the face of the blonde guy I had seen earlier. I watched in awe as his body melted from the brick wall I'd been leaning on. He was at least ten centimeters taller than me. Along with the blonde hair he had bright blue eyes covered by yellow goggles. His hero suit had a red cape and 1,000,000 written across the front.

"We just wanted to talk and sort things out. You knew that other girl's name and she clearly recognized you. But she also recognized the other guy, even after he said he didn't know you. So which is it?" He had backed me up to the wall on the other side of the alley. He towered above me, the sun glowing like a halo around his head.

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you. They never do" The last part was whispered under my breath but he still seemed to hear it.

"They who?" He tilted his head like a confused puppy. "I've never met you before in my life. How are you to know what I might think?"

That's a good question. Not all heroes were bad people. Living on the streets, most would just turn and ignore me, but there were a few who would give me food or whatever money they had on them when I refused to go to a shelter. Like my favorite Eraserhead, he had taken to calling me Problem Child whenever I ran into him.

"You want to know. That was my little sister who I haven't seen in two years 'cause that bastard Overhaul kicked me out so he could use her and 'cure the world' or some bullshit like that." Everything came out in a single breath. Tears were flowing down my face. I quickly wiped them away.

For his part, the blonde tried to keep his emotions in check. Tried. But I could see on his face that he didn't believe me. I don't know what I expected; everyone I tried explaining this to thought I was crazy. "I knew you wouldn't believe me. Nobody ever does. I'll just get out of your hair." I stood and turned away from him. "Thanks for listening at least."

"Wait!" He shouted after me. "Please let me help you. I promise, if you come back with me, we will figure this out. We will get your sister back."

He sounded so sure. But I had heard all those words before from others who just wanted to put me in a shelter. "Goodbye, Hero" With a flash of power every piece of garbage and debris in the alley raced toward him and blocked his view of me. Within I minute I was gone.

Luckily or unluckily my hideout was only a few buildings over. Slipping in behind a dumpster that hid the entrance, I climbed up to the disguised loft area and collapsed on the mattress I had shoved in there. There was a hole in the roof which let in air and the weather.

Laying on the bed, I curled in on myself as a sudden chill raked me with painful shivers. Tears rolled down my face at the thought of my failed plan.

It had taken me months to narrow down where Kai had Eri. And now because of those dumb heroes, I had lost my chance. Overhaul would probably never let Eri out again or he would move her to one of the other locations. I was never going to see my little sister again. I was never going to hug her, never see her start school, or meet her first boyfriend. The tears flow faster.

Another painful shudder runs through my body. I wrapped the blanket I had stolen from a donation bin around me in hopes of staving off the chill. Everything I owned at this point had been stolen from donation bins or clothing lines I'd come across in people's backyards. Kai had thrown me out with nothing but the outfit I was wearing. I spent the first few months just trying to find someplace to stay with an intact roof. This one wasn't completely intact but it was better than the other places I had stayed.

When a third even more painful tremor shook me from head to toe, I finally knew something was wrong. Normally, the blanket was enough. I didn't usually keep shivering after covering myself, plus it wasn't late enough in the year for me to be this cold. The only thing that had changed was meeting that hero-in-training.

Fuck, he was my soulmate.

Heck yeah, I got this done in a relatively decent amount of time. I'm planning on working on my Avengers story next, but that might take a little bit longer.
