THE EDEN CLUB

The rain misled down upon Clara, the weather somber like her soul. For Freddie Thorne was dead and her family had gathered to lay him to rest.

She stood arm-in-arm with Finn who now towered above her, having shot up like a weed over the last two years and he, like his brothers before him was in training to be a Blinder. He'd even joined the ranks at the betting shop, and now it was a true family affair at Shelby Company Limited.

At the sound of a babies cry, Clara glanced over to see her new little nephew fussing in Esme's arms and she gave the woman an small smile when their eyes met before her attention turned to Thomas as he stepped forward, cap clutched in his hands "I promised my friend Freddie Thorne that I'd say a few words over his grave if he should pass before me. I made this promise before he became me brother-in-law. When we were in France, fighting for the King."

Arthur raised his chin "Amen."

"And in the end it wasn't war that took Freddie." Thomas sighed "Pestilence took him."

Seeing his son still fussing, John sighed before stopping him from Esme's arms "Come 'ere."

Thomas lifted his gaze from his fallen friends coffin as it was lowered into the ground and looked to Ada and the little boy in her arms "But Freddie passed on his soul and his spirit to a new generation before he was cruelly taken."

Ada's jaw tightened as she looked away, grip tightening on her son before the pastor cleared his throat "Let us bow our heads and pray for Freddie's eternal peace with the Lord."

With great reluctance, Ada had agreed to let Karl remain under her families watch as Thomas pulled her aside for a talk but that didn't stop her from glancing back at the graveyard every so often "We thought, now Freddie's gone, you might come back to Birmingham."

Ada didn't answer for a moment before scoffing "God, do you know how funny it is that you've got chauffeurs in uniform now?"

Thomas sighed as he drew a puff from his cigarette "It's just for the occasion, Ada."

"Do you know how unfair it is that you've got four Bugattis when half the country's starving?" She questioned, turning to him with her hands on her hips.

"So now they've made you ashamed of us, eh?" He lofted an eyebrow.

Ada shook her head "Sometimes when I think how I used to be, it makes me embarrassed."
