CHAPTER 1: New Year

MAY POV

I woke up to the to the soft crinkling of snow dropping by my windows. Opening my eyes and realizing it was a new year I became full from mixed emotions. I didn't let that bother me anyways. I'm proud of the woman I finally made myself to be at 29, selfless, kind, smart and hardworking.

I checked the cute clock beside my bed stand and it was 10:00am and the weather seemed so great in Bel-Air. " Ahhrrggh" I said as I yawned out loud and scratched my hair "Satisfying" I said to myself as I smiled. I checked my phone and saw series of messages and missed calls from colleagues and my families too and I knew why they were calling instantly but I ignored all as I began daydreaming as usual.

I'm a fashionista and also a model. I live in a two-bedroom apartment inside some neighborhood. It had a lawn, a garden, a park and some restaurants too. I'm single to stupor. Not like I want that but I had never had a healthy relationship. The last one ended in a disaster, He tried to raise my dress on our date night. Irritated and angry, I stood up and slapped him on the cheek. It caused an embarrassing scene which I didn't care. I walked out and drove away never to see him. I blocked his number and also deleted it. I didn't even remember his name. That is enough to work on though.

I didn't realize Eliana my best friend was watching me as I was subconsciously staring in my world of galaxies with brilliant colors. She arrived a night before to come celebrate the New Year with me. "May!!_"she called out with her eyes almost rolling out of their sockets. "What's wrong!!" I asked startled with the same tone. "What are you staring at so dumbly? Are you out of your mind?" she asked fumbling with my make-up table. "You're not serious" I replied getting off my bed.

"So any plans for today" I asked her as I was making my way to the kitchen and she following behind. "Girls hangout and then we go for shopping" She suggested as she made coffee. "Not so good" I replied. "You know what Elly..." I paused..."I think it's time for a change" I said as I made batter for pancakes. "What's that supposed to mean" she asked smirking. I smiled and replied "Let's try something new you know like... I thought for a while "Go see movies, go to clubs, make new friends in the city". Then I moved towards the sink to wash my hands while she stared at me thinking.

"Well... It's all good" she said plainly. "Is something wrong?" I asked. "Nope it's a good idea. I was just wondering why you changed your mind all of a sudden" She replied as she brought out a pack of bacon from the freezer. "Cos we aren't teenagers Elly. You and I know that" I replied " We can't continue like this sweetie". She smiled sheepishly "I understand plus I'm hungry can you be quick?". "Bloody foodie" I replied as I rolled my eyes.

After breakfast, we cleaned the kitchen and I went to take a shower leaving Elly in the living room. She was watching something which I wasn't focusing on as I strode across to my bedroom. After a while fumbling with what to wear and deciding how to manage my day, I decided to call my mum.

"Hi mom, Happy new year" I said loudly on the phone. "Happy new year mama" She also replied happily. " How have you been and how's dad, Pete and Armani?" I asked. "We've been good. Your brothers were disappointed hearing the news that you won't be coming to New York for New year" She told me "ohh.. I'm so sorry. I'll come for the Easter thanksgiving I promise" I said sadly. "It's no problem and thanks for the gifts I love my necklace and your dad loves his winter coat" She replied. "You are welcome" I said in a high pitch voice. "Okay I miss you sweetie" She said. "I miss you too mum and everyone else okay. We will talk later. Bye." I said as I began to feel tears in my eyes. "Take care sweetheart" She replied and I ended the call.

I sighed sadly. Last year has been a really long one. I had a career and a business to run. I had millions of dresses to add to my catalog and also my modeling career needs attention. Unlike my friend Elly, she works from home and has been given a three-weeks holiday. She is a computer software programmer. I have no idea what her work is like but she loves her job. She is also single but not for long. A baddie indeed. And now I can't go back to New York for the holiday because of the fear of loosing any of my careers.

I took my phone and went to join Elly in the sitting room and she smiled immediately she saw me. "Hi" She said. "How is it going" I asked her about the series she was watching. "It isn't that bad" She replied as she watched. " What time do you think we should go celebrate" I asked as I checked the time. "What does it says?" She asked pointing to my phone. "1:35pm" I replied. "Hmmm 4:00pm?" she asked. "Perfect" I answered standing to go grab a cup of coffee. "Make two!!" She yelled. "Food monster!!" I yelled back at her as I laughed.

"Elly!!!" I yelled frustrated as I waited. "Just a second" I heard her say from her room. "What the hell we are 30 minutes late you freaking pole!!!" I yelled. I hate it when people don't stick to time. She came out in a short yellow gown and white sneakers with a small white bag. "Hmmm worth the wait at least. Let's get out of this house" I said as I walked towards the door. I grabbed my keys at the back of the door and locked it the door as Elly got out. I sighed as I started the engines and boom!!! Off we go.

I sped along the cold streets of Bel-Air well maybe not because I wasn't feeling it probably cos I turned on the heater in the car before leaving home. "Did you take your coat along?" I asked Elly. "Sure" She answered. "I know it's going to be a cold night" She replied as she scrolled through Instagram. I turned on my radio and after fooling with it for sometime I left it as it played New year's day by Bon Jovi.

After about 30 minutes of speeding and overtaking. I stopped at a fancy looking disco bar. Music was blasting from inside but all I could hear was blurry sounds. Elly looked around and looked at me. I smiled back at her and she tucked her phone right into her bag. "It's gonna be hot in there don't take your coat or it might get lost" I told her. "Okay" she replied as she swallowed hard. "Don't be nervous, we both know you're a baddie" I winked at her and we both laughed hard. "Alright shall we" she asked and we both left the car. I made sure I auto locked the door before entering the bar.

We walked in and it was really hot. "Whoa" I said as I looked around. "This is great" I hear Elly yelling so I could hear due to the blasting music and noise. We danced to different songs from the DJ after a little while I dragged her to the bar table to get drinks or something. We were offered complimentary shots for New year which I ignored but Elly downed both in a few seconds. "Ohhh" She said with her eyes wide open "This is so good hmm I love it". "You gotta be joking" I replied. I asked the bartender for plain wine no alcohol. I hate alcohol. Elly asked for more shots. "I hope this tequilla doesn't kill you" I told her jokingly. "It can't and it never will baby" She replied.

After drinking we continued dancing. To my surprise Elly didn't look drunk. "Good for us" I thought to myself. Then shortly into the dance a guy came up to her and said something in her hear. I heard her giggle then I knew she was done for. I smiled and faced the DJ to continue hyoing and singing. After a while, Elly came to me that she will be outside. "No problem just stay safe" I told her. "Okay" she said. I watched her as she strode off with a white man that I couldn't identify. After sometime I became so tired I had to sit down.

I looked around and wondered how people were just dancing and shouting and doing all sort of drinking and making out. I checked the time and it was 8:30pm. I gasped and thought of how much time we spent in what seemed to be a short while. Elly was still outside so I turned to the bartender and sipped some fruit wine. I brought out out my phone and began replying all my text. As soon as I was done I checked the time and it was past 9:00pm.

I went out and saw Elly with the white guy. Well they were just talking and nothing more. I sighed with relief and made a signal so she could round up whatever they were talking about. After a while she joined me then we walked to the car hand-in-hand. I started the engine and started driving. Elly waved goodbye to her friend and he blew her a kiss. "Ouuuhh so fast so what's his name" I said in surprise. "May" she said rolling her eyes then finally said plainly "Smith... He is just a random friend" she replied. "And so was Zeke,Asher, Philip and Alex" I said as I smirked for her to see. "Hmm get out" she said laughing in disgust " I hate all of them". "I know you do" I replied.

We got home around past 11pm and eventually fell asleep while talking on the couch. It was a really long day. We couldn't go for our dinner date due to exhaustion and it was also late at night.
