chapter one; the philosophers stone

1991

✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧

The sun rose early on the double white wooden door of the Wilson Manor on March 18th, 1991. The sun crept into the large, spacious cream living room and highlighted the photos on the black mantelpiece, showing how much time had passed. Ten years ago, there had been lots of pictures of three siblings, one boy and two girls. All three siblings each had a different shade of red hair and green eyes.

"JAKE!" Eleven-year-old Zoe Wilson shouted as she jumped on her older brother's double bed. "JAKE WAKE UP!" Thirteen-year-old Jake Wilson woke up with a start then groaned in annoyance when he saw his eleven-year-old sister's face grinning at her.

"For Merlin's sake Zo," Jake groaned as he pushed Zoe off his bed and chuckled as the young blonde fell to the floor with a thud, "it's six in the bloody morning."

"I don't care!" Zoe said, jumping right back up, "my Hogwarts letter could be arriving! You and Erin talk about it so much!"

Jake was to start his third year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in September, and her eldest sibling, Erin, was about to start her seventh year.

"Are you two enjoying yourselves there?" Erin said as she laughed at her younger siblings.

"Erin!" Zoe said happily, her wavy red hair bouncing behind her.

"Happy birthday Zo," Erin said, hugging her sister tightly, "now come on, should we get some breakfast?"

Zoe nodded took her sister's hand and together they walked down the white marble staircase, down the long, sophisticated corridor and into the large kitchen where Mrs. Wilson was waiting for her daughters.

"Happy birthday darling!" Mrs. Wilson said as Zoe grinned and hugged her mum.  "Now, what do you want for breakfast?"

"Pancakes!" Zoe said, sitting at the kitchen island as Jake sat next to her, looking very tired. Mrs. Wilson chuckled.

"Very well darling," she said as she walked over to the counter and began making the pancakes. Just then, they heard the click of the mail slot and flop of letters on the doormat.

"I'll get it!" Anna yelled, jumping out of her seat and running to get the mail.

Three things lay on the black doormat. A postcard from Mrs. Wilson's sister Mary, who was vacationing in Hawaii, a brown envelope that looked like a bill, and the letter Zoe had been waiting for ever since she knew about Hogwarts. Zoe let out a loud and excited scream as she dropped the other letters and ran into the kitchen with a joyful look on her face.

"Did it arrive?" Mrs. Wilson asked amused as Zoe nodded.

"Look!" Zoe said, holding the letter up and beaming. The letter she had been waiting for, addressed so plainly there could be no mistake:

Miss. Z. Wilson
The Master Bedroom
24 Bayswater Road
Royal Borough of Kensington
London

The envelope was thick and heavy, made of yellowish parchment, and the address was written in emerald-green ink. There was no stamp. Turning the envelope over, Zoe saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms. A lion, an eagle, a badger, and a snake surrounding a large letter H.

"Well open it then," Jake said grinning as his sister as she sat back at the table and opened the letter. She pulled out the letter and read:

HOGWARTS SCHOOL of WITCHCRAFT and WIZARDRY
Headmaster: ALBUS DUMBLEDORE
(Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorc., Chf. Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International Confed. of Wizards)
