The cool air whistled against the forest leaves, rustling the branches. A choking eeriness dense in the air. The moon hung high in the sky, the crescent peering down on the inky forest floor.

Mattheo's eyes adjusted to the dark, irises a faint orange as he peered at the large footprints leading up to a cluster of bushes. There was a grunting sound, deep and unnerving. It had to be the creature that he saw earlier.

As the raven haired teen walked closer to the shrub, the grunting ceased. Mattheo could only hear his heart thumping in his chest and shallow breaths as a result of running all the way out into the woods.

A large figure popped out of the bush and rushed towards Mattheo. It was fast-moving for its size, covered in shaggy brown hair, and had single eye in the middle of its face.

"Ha! It's a fucking c-" The monster smacked Mattheo into a tree before he could finish his sentence. The tree groaned from the force, the bark cracking where Mattheo's back hit it.

The teen cursed, rolling over to his side before finally stumbling back up.

"Hey dude, I think you cracked my ribs," he complained, clutching at his side. The cyclops roared, daring Mattheo to come closer.

Mattheo grinned, eyes burning a bright, daring orange. He darted forward, powerful legs digging into the dirt to launch in the air.. Black dagger-like claws replaced his fingernails.

SLASH!

Mattheo clawed at the Troll's torso, where its chest was barely covered by a tattered, crusty looking cloth.

The Troll screeched in pain, thwacking Mattheo away once more and escaping off into the night.

For the second time that night Mattheo got struck down. His ribs throbbed every time he took a breath, but he knew he had to get back to the school on his own.

Mattheo felt his fractured ribs slowly fix themselves back in place as he sat next to his friends. It didn't hurt nearly as much as it did last night.

Mattheo didn't heal as fast as the vampires and werewolves, but he could heal from far worse. Most of the time it was a disadvantage, but there were some advantages. Vampires don't get to enjoy love bites and hickeys from their partners, do they?

"Yo Mattie you look like shit" Jed, a werewolf, commented, fumbling with the football in his hands. Mattheo would describe Jed as the stereotypical dumb jock who would bone any girl with a pulse, but he had his good moments. Right now Mattheo was hanging out with the wolf population of The Salvatore Boarding school. They all congregated at the library, even though most of them would never willingly touch a book.

"Fuck off Jed. There was this ugly cyxlops looking monster in the forest last night and no one wanted to come help me fight it." Mattheo remarked, maneuvering his back to be leaning over the armrest of the couch.

“A cyclops? Like a one eyed cyclops?” a wolf named Alex dumbly asked.

“No, an 8 eyed cyclops you idiot,” Jed retorted. Everyone laughed at his lighthearted inusult.

Mattheo could argue that the satisfying crack he coaxed out of his back was better than sex.

"No hard feelings man?" Jed nudged the olive toned teen, tossing the pigskin football to another werewolf.

Mattheo didn't get a chance to speak again before his favorite vampire walked up to them.

"Hey Mattheo, can I ask you a favor?" MG inquired, fiddling with his fingers . Mattheo made a mental note to ask him why he was so worked up.

"Sure man," he agreed, standing up and walking with the curly haired vampire over to a more private spot. There weren't a lot of those in the school, half of the population had super hearing. MG took a deep breath, looking around to make sure there were no unwanted listeners.

"I asked Lizzie on a study date at the old mill and I wanted to know if you could check the place out, maybe hook us up with some drinks, maybe music?" He pleaded. That must've been why he was so giddy, Lizzie must've finally looked his way. MG wanted to come off as cool and fun to Lizzie, that’s the type of guy she usually goes for.

Mattheo was friends with Lizzie and enjoyed hanging out with her, but she didn't give MG the time of day. Mattheo believed that the hopeless vampire should just move on and find another girl to pine after. But he couldn't say that to his face, so Mattheo just nodded.

"Sure man, what time?"

"2:00, in like 3 hours. Thank you so much man, hey, I owe you one ok?" MG thanked him, giving a friendly clap on the shoulder as he sped away.

Mattheo sat there for a moment, cursing himself for not being able to say no. And with that, the hellhound set out to find supplies to make this the perfect first date for MG.
