"Constance? Why did you call for me?" Evanora asks as she walks into her stepmother's room. The redhead was studying when suddenly her familiar, Bela, rushed into her room to tell her Constance needed her immediately. She notices her stepmother is sitting on the bed, looking at her swollen stomach with worry.
"I- I think something is wrong with my babies. I called Sister Zelda, we should go to her!" She steps forward, about to teleport herself and Evie away as her stepdaughter quickly grabs her arms and puts them firmly at her side.
"You will do no such thing! You can't use intense magic, remember? I will get the car and drive us there." Evanora states, staring her stepmother in the eyes. Constance nods with reluctance.
"Yes... yes. You're right, of course. But what if we get there too late?" Her eyes widen and she starts to panic once again, gripping Evie's forearms. "I can't lose them!"
"You won't, I promise." Evanora quickly smiles at her, reassuringly. 'Not that I care.' The girl thinks to herself. "Now come on, my car is nearby."
The drive to the Spellman house was a bit of a struggle at first, seeing as there are no roads that lead to the Academy, only a railroad. So it was rather bumpy before they got onto a nearby road. When they eventually got there, Evie quickly got out and rushed to the passenger door to help Constance get out of the car and up the porch steps. Knocking rapidly on the door, they heard the sound of heels clicking as it got closer and closer.
The door opened and Zelda stood there, her eyebrows knitted together as she saw her daughter standing there with Constance. "Lady Blackwood, Evanora." She looks between the two. "Come in, and go down to the basement. I just need to grab my medical bag." Evie reluctantly nods at her mother as she carefully guides Constance down the stairs and onto the examining chair.
"It's gonna be fine, Constance." The girl reassures her, gently rubbing her back as the older woman vigorously shakes her head. Before Constance can protest, Zelda walks back in with Sabrina right behind her, holding a tray.
"Hey, Cousin." Evie greets her softly.
Sabrina's face suddenly lights up. "Hey!" She joins Evanora and puts down the tray with tea.
"At first there were cramps, then I saw blood." Constance is unable to lie still and her breathing is rapid. "I was spotting... my babies, are they all right?"
"Tranquil thoughts, Lady Blackwood, you're fine." Zelda reassures her as she holds the woman's hand.
"I can't lose my babies. Faustus will never forgive me." Lady Blackwood speaks in a rapid tone. "I don't want to fail him."
"Nonsense. Sabrina, pour the tea." The redhead commands.
"Already poured it, Aunt Zee."
"It's not poison, is it?" Constance asks in panic, setting herself upright on the table.
"Why would it be poison?" Evanora accidentally thinks out loud. Her mother quickly talks over her, however.
"Of course not. It's chamomile with a calming tincture." She says, taking the cup from Sabrina and handing it to Constance with a suggestive eyebrow. "Drink up. Finish every drop, that's a good girl." She encourages her as Constance drinks with some slight reluctance.
"What's happening? What's wrong with me?" Constance asks in a breathy tone.
"And why do you think it was poisoned?" Evie adds, but still no one seems to respond to that question. Sabrina shares a brief look with the young redhead, however. Thinking the exact same thing.
"Your blood pressure is abnormally high." Zelda replies. "You're having a panic attack. Have you done any intense spellcasting lately? Sometimes that can stress a pregnancy."
"It was dangerous, but I had to do it." The room falls silent for a moment as the other three women stare at Constance. "You two understand, don't you?" She turns her gaze over to the two young adults standing in the corner. Sabrina gives her a confused look and Evie can't help but do the same. What does she mean?
When neither one of the speechless teenagers answer, Zelda and Constance raise their eyebrows in expectancy and they give a slight nod.
Sabrina is the first to answer. "Of course, Lady Blackwood, I understand you."
"Mhm." Evie hums in agreement with a slow nod.
"You know what they're really like. Always whispering and... and plotting and... and I think they're gonna kill my babies." The mother-to-be looks like she is about to cry again after the crack in her voice. Zelda is swift to soothe her.
"No one is going to hurt your babies. You just have a touch of third trimester hysteria, nothing more." The redhead carefully guides Constance to lie back down on the examination table chair again. Constance seems to calm down a bit, but Sabrina couldn't help but wonder what she was on about.
"Who's plotting?" The blonde asks as she steps closer.
"Those Weird Sisters." Constance pants lightly. "Those sluts." Again, everyone in the room falls silent. Sabrina tries to look at her aunt but fails to catch her gaze so she turns to her cousin instead. Evie and Sabrina share a confused look at first but then Evanora can't help but smirk a little. "I won't let them conspire against me. My children will come first."
"Why? Why should the orphans wish you any harm?" Zelda queried.
"All three of them, they think they're so clever. Planning what belongs to my children. They would have done anything. Hurt them, curse them." Constance glances at the two young women to her right and now it suddenly makes sense for Evie. They could potentially be his children too, meaning the Weird Sisters might want to take his position as high priest. "So I had to hurt them first." She continues as Zelda gives Sabrina and Evie a concerned look now as well, especially staring at Evanora. "Kill one, and the others are no threat of consequence."
"Uhm... we should get going." Evie suggests with an awkward smile. Constance nods absently and they say their goodbyes. As Constance makes her way up the stairs, Zelda holds onto Evie's wrist and gently pulls her back.
"Evie, wait." She says with a hint of concern in her tone. Sabrina is behind her and frowns at her aunt, while Evanora just rolls her eyes but waits anyway. "I know you and Constance get along, but please check yourself for any curses. A woman with third trimester hysteria might lash out to anyone."
"I know." The young redhead replies, slowly removing herself from her mother's grasp. "I can take care of myself." Then she turns and follows her stepmother.
"Indeed..." Zelda whispers and looks over her right shoulder to see Sabrina having the biggest smile on her face. "What now?" The redhead sighs.
"You're talking to one another!" The blonde grins, making Zelda roll her eyes.
"If that is what you call talking." Zelda sighs. "Come on, let's get some tea."
Meanwhile, Constance and Evie got back into the car and made their way off the porch. "So, let me get this straight." Evie starts. "You think the orphans are his daughters too?" Constance nods, but doesn't say anything so Evanora continues. "Why?"
It takes a moment for the woman to answer, seemingly thinking it over. "Because he practically treats Prudence as his own daughter."
"Only Prudence?" The redhead frowns and Constance nods. "Why?"
"No need for you to know everything." She mutters, making Evie frown.
"But if she is his daughter, why did he leave her to be an orphan? Father didn't do that with me." Evanora questions. Constance lets out a short huff.
"But everyone knew you were his. Plus Zelda and Edward made sure you were acknowledged as his child, even though you now have the Spellman name." Constance explains. Evanora just hums curiously as they set off to return to the academy.
A/N Sorry, the chapter ends a bit abruptly XD But I didn't know how to end it. I am already working on the next one as well though so let's hope I can get that uploaded next week. Hope you enjoyed this one xx Vex
