Chapter 1

  Night stood on a log for a moment before leaping into a hollow.
  "Moonwish?" She mewed. "I've come home Ma."
  A gray blue speckled cat walked out of a den, seemingly made by badger.
  "Yes, my little 'mare?"
  Night sat down. This will be a while, she thought. The nickname 'mare was for the end of her name, Nightmare.
  "I found a new cat scent along our border." She explained.
  Moonwish looked up from washing her paw. She shifted.
  "Well, it's probably nothing to worry about. Go to sleep now, dear."
  Moonwish stepped back into her den, her silver wings shining in the moonlight through gaps in the tree leaves.
  Night followed and curled up beside her mother, purring.

  Dawn woke Night. Dew sparkled in the clearing. But coldness felt behind her. She got up, stretching. She looked where Moonwish would be normally.
  But no cat was there. No tail even. Night caught whiff of Moonwish's scent, clashed with by blood.
  Night followed, scared. A new cat's scent hit her nose.
  Dread filled her.
  A body, ripped apart and shredded, layed in front of her. Only a hair of light blue silver fur gave who it was away.
  "Ma?" She whimpered. A cat whipped it's head at her words.
  Night shrieked before running and gliding away. The cat chased her with thudding pawsteps.
  The wilds beyond were her only option.

  Night, out of breath, reached the lands beyond her home. A crow squawked.
  Suddenly a crow black cat with crow black moth wings stepped out from behind the tree the crow was on.
  "Ah. So you've finally come."
  "What do you mean?"
  The black cat's tail twitched in annoyance. A crow landed on his shoulder.
  "My name is Crow. Crow Night. I've seen you edge around your borders."
  "My mother died." She whimpered. The black cat tapped her with its tail. Night looked up at him.
  Confidence filled her.
  "My name is Nightmare, nobody else will call me Night anymore."
  Crow held her gaze.
  "My ally. Now go to sleep. You seem exhausted, Nightmare."
  Nightmare nodded, and padded towards a den, and layed down.
