Chapter 6: Tape 9

Hannah Baker: I've got a question for you, Justin. Not the one you think. Not yet. What's the best part of high school? The great friends you make? The romance? No. We both know the best part of high school... is summer break. It's the great reset button. And after everything that happened to me sophomore year... I couldn't wait to start fresh... to tear the rest of the pages from my journal and forget it all. Except I didn't get very far. At work, my usual partner in crime was spending the summer with his grandparents. His temporary replacement was nice enough, but entirely too normal. And I couldn't escape my past. I needed a change. I needed to be someone new. Have you ever felt like that? I wasn't going to be invisible anymore. I was going to start brand new. I was going to cut away the past... and leave it all behind. I was going to work harder. Be smarter. And be stronger. Because you can't change other people, but you can change yourself.

Clay listened to tape 9, it a 2nd tape for Justin Foley. In tape 9, Clay hears from Hannah about the night of Jessica Davis' party from 2 months ago, it was the night that Jeff Atkins died. Hannah reveals that she witness someone get raped and Justin let it happen. After listening to tape 9, Clay figured out who the girls was. Hannah said that Justin had been with the same girl all night. The only girl that Clay can remember seeing Justin with that night was Jessica Davis. Hannah also said that the boy who did it was someone that Justin called a friend. It wasn't Zach because he was outside in the front with Jeff & Troy. The only other friend that Justin has and is very close with is none other than Bryce Walker. Clay goes to school and finds Jessica hanging out with Sheri, Justin, Bryce, & Zach. Jessica notices Clay looking at her knowing he listened to the part about her party. Clay can tell that she had been drinking. Jessica goes inside the school as Clay follows her inside and catches up to her in the hallways.

Clay Jensen: Hey, Jessica. Jessica. I heard the tape about your party.

Jessica Davis: Seriously? Haven't you figured it out? Those tapes are bullshit.

Clay Jensen: I don't think they are.

Jessica Davis: Move on.

Clay Jensen: Tell me why.

Jessica Davis: Move on.

Clay Jensen: No.

Jessica Davis: My God! Okay, fine. Come here.

Jessica drags Clay inside a empty classroom.

Jessica Davis: Seriously, Clay? Get over it.

Clay Jensen: It was you she was talking about, right? Because if it was, I want to help, okay? We need to do something about it. Tell someone.

Jessica Davis: That night did not happen the way Hannah said.

Clay Jensen: Then how did it happen?

Jessica Davis: I hooked up with my boyfriend.

Clay Jensen: With Justin.

Jessica Davis: Yeah. With Justin.

Clay Jensen: Hannah said you were completely out of it. She said things happened.

Jessica Davis: If something happened, I'd remember it. We were both pretty drunk, so we basically just passed out after.

Clay Jensen: Justin told you that, or you remember?

Jessica Davis: I remember. Okay? So back off.

Jessica begins to leave when Justin shows up.

Justin Foley: Man, Jensen, you just can't leave it alone, can you?
