"James T Kirk get that smirk off your face" I muttered, laughing as I walked past my best friend's famous chair. He laughed, Spock giving us a raised eyebrow.
As if on queue, the staff to relieve us of the day shift walked through the turbolift doors. Finishing the last of the reports for the day, the crew left their posts and gathered into the turbolift together.
We chatted amongst ourselves, Uhura, Spock, Chekov and Sulu heading to the mess hall, while me, Jim and Bones got off to make our way down to Recreation room 3.
Jim, Bones and I grew up together at the academy. Getting into ridiculous things and pissing off every Starfleet official we could. Every day felt like some sort of an adventure. We were the trio of best friends, sometimes joined by Spock however he didn't see the point in having a main group of friends when we offered for him to "join" us that way.
Usually all we did in the Recreation rooms was sit, drink, laugh and play 3D chess, but today something felt different. I couldn't quite place it, and so carried on with our activities as normal.
"Checkmate!" I squealed, Bones sighing in his chair. For once I had a winning streak, much to my friend's dislike.
"Fair game El" Jim said, reaching out to shake my hand but pulling away as I approached him. I rolled my eyes and poured myself another glass of whiskey.
"Don't you think you've had enough?" Bones retorted, snatching the glass out of my hands. I thought it was a joke, but my smile soon slipped when I saw the concerning demeanour the two men were staring at me with.
I tried to play it off, "Why're you looking at me like that?" I chuckled anxiously.
"Lee, there's something we need to talk about." Bones replied.
I didn't respond
"For the past few weeks you've been screaming in your sleep and"
"What?" I cut him off, looking to Jim hoping for this to be a joke.
"We've been trying to wake you but there's never any luck" The Captain said
"So we take you to sickbay, give you some hypo's and take you back" Bones continued
"And you never decided to tell me until now?" I snapped, grabbing back the glass of whisky that the two had confiscated. Drinking it all in one swig I slammed it back down, waiting for a response. I was offered none.
"Bullshit" I muttered, and quickly left the room.
Marching down to Sickbay for some answers, some officers must have noticed the anger in my steps because i soon heard the communicators of several crew members alert my friends. Sickbay was quiet, but it was about to get louder. "Jane!" I shouted, watching my tall friend peek from behind the office walls wearing the signature medical officer uniform, "Show me the files please." I demanded, not allowing her to respond.
"What files?"
"You know damn well what files I'm talking about."
"Did the Captain tell you?"
"Show me them, I have a right to know what the hells been going on with my own body!"
Jane hesitated, looking towards the doors and then back to me. She reluctantly led me to McCoy's office. Pressing some buttons on the control pad, she allowed me to sit down and read. Seconds later, Bones followed by Jim burst through sickbay's entrance.
"Dammit woman you showed her the files?!" Bones screamed, snatching the reports from my hands and taking them outside.
"Bones give me that back!" I followed, chasing him through Sickbay
"Stop it!"
"Give me them now!" I struggled, attempting to pry the PADD from his hand.
"ENOUGH" Jim shouted over the chaos, forcing us into silence, "Give her the files, Bones"
Bones frowned and dumped the reports into my hands, accepting the defeat with a sigh.
Striding back into his office I sat down and began to look through the reports, my mouth only widening in disbelief.
"4 weeks?" I finally blurted out, "This has been going on for 4... weeks?" My voice got louder.
"Lee, please just listen" Jim asserted, it was no use.
"No! You're supposed to be my friends why the hell wouldn't you tell me about something like this? I got up to leave.
"Lee!" The Captain followed me through the partition
"Goodnight Jim"
"Lee wait!"
"Goodnight"
