This chapter is also during high school.
Matt Sturniolo POV
I stared down at the large quarry below nervously. Apparently, my class chose to swim at the quarry for our field trip. Don't get me wrong, I love to swim. But I've always sort of felt self conscious whenever I'm stripped down to my swim trunks. I don't know, I just get so anxious before these kinds of things. It's a good thing I have my brothers here to support me since they're in the same class. One by one my classmates leaped off the cliff edge. They laughed and joked, pushing each other around with large smiles on their faces. I just watched as one of them tripped off the side, crashing into the deep water below. It made me flinch, shutting my eyes tightly. I can imagine ten different possible ways that could've ended horribly.
"Hey, you okay man?" Chris clapped a hand on my back.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I stared down at the water, goosebumps rising on my arms.
"You don't have to go in if you don't want to," Nick said seriously at my other side.
"I can do it," I stated firmly.
The two shared a look before nodding.
"Hey dorks!" a loud voice shouted from behind us.
I flinched again, until I saw who it is. It's none other than Derek Jeeterman. The football-playing, popular bully. He messes with us all the time and calls us 'Triplet 1,' 'Triplet 2,' and 'Triplet 3.' It's really annoying.
"You guys look a little hot," Derek smirked. "Why don't we help with that?"
Him and his gang pushed us off the edge, one by one. I didn't have the nerve to even scream. Instead, I just clamped my eyes shut and held myself together until I crashed into the cold water. I sunk deep into the water, but when I looked up I realized that I'm way too deep for my liking. I began to swim up, but I'm too far under to make it without losing oxygen. At this point, I'm clawing through the water with as much energy as I can muster. I'm not going to make it. I came to that realization once I lost all my breath and strength. Exhausted, I let my eyes flutter shut.Chris Sturniolo POV
I came up for air, glaring up Derek's stupid face. Him and his friends laughed at us. Nick appeared at my side with the same angered look.
"They're such idiots," I muttered.
"Tell me about it," Nick sighed.
"Where's Matt?" I frowned, just noticing his absence.
Nick shrugged.
"Did you see him come up?" he questioned.
"No," my frown deepened in concern.
Nick and I ducked under, searching for our brother. But we never found him. Our concern only grew as we asked our classmates if they've seen him. And each and every one of them just shook their heads and continued with their little activities. I was just about to go tell the teacher Matt's missing when an ear-piercing shriek rang out. Nick and I exchanged a terrified look before heading over to where the scream originated. One of our fellow classmates, Jessica, is kneeling over a soaked and unconscious Matt. She placed two of trembling her fingers underneath his neck to check his pulse and pulled back with a gasp.
"He's not breathing," tears streamed down her face.
At this point, Nick and I are running out of the water towards our brother.
"Nick, go get Mr. Mullins," I ordered.
With a single nod, Nick took off in the teacher's direction. I began applying CPR compressions on Matt's chest, just like we learned in health class. I checked for a pulse every now and then before continuing in the compressions.
"Jessica, what happened?" I asked, trying to maintain calm.
"I was just going to get out when I saw-I saw his body," the girl cried. "He looked d-dead."
Nick returned with Mr. Mullins in tow.
"Boys, what happened?" he asked urgently.
As Jessica relayed the story for a second time, Matt suddenly jolted back to life. He spluttered, coughing up a whole ton of water. I rubbed his back in circles.
"You're okay," I told him softly. "You're okay."
Once Matt's brain could fully function, he hugged Nick and I tightly. Then, he got things situated with Mr. Mullins. Apparently, Derek, the jerk, had pushed him to the deepest part of the quarry. Matt couldn't make it out in time before he slowly came out of conciousness. Long story short, Matt thanked Jessica for saving him and Derek's suspended for three weeks. Everyone's happy :)
