the halloween holidays soon passed and before i even knew it, we were back at school. i rubbed my eyes, wakening up to the bright light shining through the coloured windows. sighing, i got out of bed and quickly got changed into my uniform and brushed through my brunette hair, before i rushed down the long steps.
i arrived in the great hall, seeing it was already busy, the noise of cutlery against plates and people chatting filled the room. my eyes settled on my three best friends, the frizzy haired girls eyes lightening up at the sight of me. i smiled at her as i sat down next to harry.
"morning nova! good sleep?" harry asked, as i bit into a slice of toast. "yeah, it was alright i suppose." i grinned, before spotting the familiar owl flying towards the gryffindor table. "what the bloody hell is your owl doing here?" Ron asked, furrowing his eyebrows as the white owl dropped my letter in my lap.
i quickly teared it open, seeing it was a letter from my family.
Dear Nova,
hello dear! we're so sorry that you couldn't come home for halloween break, we miss you so much already and cant wait to see your face again. How was the stay at the burrow? I hope everything was alright, we really did want you at home but with the dangers in england, we'd only want you to be safe. Write back to us when you get the chance, i love you loads!
ps. Arabella will not stop talking about you, please for the love of god send a letter to her!
from, your dearest mother x
i smiled, placing the letter into my pocket as i said goodbye to my owl, as she flew out of the great hall. fred and george had came and suprisingly sat with us, placing themselves next to hermione who seemed to scowl at them squashing her.
dumbledore caught everyones attention, which was slightly confusing as he only did them on the first day of the year. "Alright everybody, if i could have your attention please." he started, the great hall going quiet. "As i had previously mentioned at the start of the year, the triwizard tournament is still happening and the two schools are the beauxbaton girls and the durmstrang boys." he said, smiling lightly. "so, i'd like you all to join me in welcoming the beauxbaton girls firstly!" he said, before a large amount of beautiful girls, all wearing matching blue outfits walked in gracefully.
"oh my, they are so beautiful." hermione whispered, i agreed and sighed as the girls finished their performance. i watched as fred didn't pay attention, only fiddled with the wand in his hand.
the durmstrang boys then came in, before dumbledore excused us to leave for class so we wouldn't be late. i had professor lupin, who i hadn't even saw before. i heard he was a nice teacher though, so i was glad for that. i stood up, swinging my bag on my back as fred looked up at me. "what class have you got? i'll walk with you." fred smiled, as i was taken by suprise. "uh, ive got defence against the dark arts." i shrugged, as he nodded. "same." was all he said, before me and him started to walk to class.
i laughed at something fred had stupidly said whilst we walked up the stairs, soon being interrupted by somebody calling freds voice. the two of us turned our heads, seeing Iris was standing with a sweet smile on her face. "hey, fred from the party, right?" she asked, completely ignoring the fact that me and him were talking. "mhm, thats me." the ginger boy replied, smiling lightly.
"you wouldn't mind showing me to potions?" she asked, fred furrowed his eyebrows as he ran a hand through his hair. who does she think she is? "sorry iris, i was actually walking with Nova." he replied awkwardly, as she scoffed under her breath, loud enough for me to hear it. "she's been at this school six years, im sure she knows by now." she spat, clearly giving me a dirty look. "Well im still walking with her, don't be bloody rude." fred suprisingly defended me, turning on his heel as i pulled a look at iris before we left.
"Jesus, what was her problem?" fred asked, as i ran a hand through my light curls. "god knows." i replied, shrugging as the two of us walked into D.A.D.A to see the class was split between the boys and the girls. i quickly walked over to the girls side, standing beside angelina who smiled happily at my presense.
The class started shortly after, a tall smiley brunette man strolled out of the small office and down the several steps, before standing infront of the two groups. "now, im professor lupin as most of you have probably heard and im excited to be teaching you lot, i've heard you all are the rather smart ones." he chuckled, pulling at his suit blazer.
he continued rambling on, but my mind was elsewhere. I knew there was something off about iris, and i was going to figure out what it was. "What's the long face for?" angelina asked, snapping my from my gaze. "Nothing." i shrugged, giving her a light smile which i knew she didn't quite believe, as she looked at me through her lashes.
" theres something bad about Iris, ang." i spoke, her eyes widening before she broke out in laughter. "your being serious right now?" angelina asked, furrowing her eyebrows as i nodded with a severe look. "Oh, im sorry if she came off in the wrong way to you but iris would never be a bad person, she's got such a sweet soul." angelina smiled.
"well thats not what it seemed like earlier to me." i sighed, giving up on trying to lecture angelina. I had a bad feeling about Iris and i wasnt going to let it go, she didn't seem good. "Nova, would you care to listen?" Professor lupin asked, the heads turned to look at me as my face heated up with embarassment.
"Sorry sir.." i replied awkwardly, as he smiled. "actually, would you stay behind after class? i need to have a word with you." the professor asked, as i nodded. my attention was fully focused on the professor as i didn't want to handle the embarassment again.
the class shortly finished after an hour and a half, everyone practically rushed out of the classroom as i ran a hand through my hair. "getting in trouble in remus's first class? risky." fred winked, walking past me as i shook my head whilst walking up to the professors teacher.
"alright Nova, please take a seat." he smiled lightly, pulling a chair up from the rows of seats with his wand. i quickly placed myself in the chair, setting my back against the chair as he sighed. "alright Nova, please correct me if i am wrong here but you are rather talented in magic, arent you?" he asked, a slight pout went onto my face.
"yeah i am, but i don't really like it being fussed over. it's just luck." i shrugged, as professor lupin nodded. "right, could you maybe show me what talents you have in magic? no worries if not, i'll not pressure you." he spoke softly, as i nodded.
carefully, i slightly squinted my eyes towards the vase on the desk, as it lifted into the air and slowly over into my hand. "Nova-" he started, but i quieted him down as i told him i wasn't done. i stood up infront of him, his eyes widened as i glared deeply at him, reading his thoughts.
"Nova.." he started, causing me to furrow my eyebrows. "These things aren't ordinary magic." he added, as i pulled a look, clearly confused.
"If you don't mind me asking, who are your parents?" Professor lupin asked, worry plastered onto his face. "Why are you so worried sir-" i asked, being interrupted by him pleading me to awnser the question. "My parents are Lilith and Oliver Larke, why?" i asked, his face clearly dropping.
"Nothing, its alright. Go head to dinner, im sure your starving." he smiled, now ushering me out of his room as i was rather concerned, rushing down to the great hall. "Nova, where have you bloody been?" Ron asked, as i sat next to hermione. "the weirdest thing just happened to me." i spoke, running my hands over my face.
what the fuck just happened?
