Today is my seventh birthday. I woke as the sunset and leaped into my parent's bed giggling. Both wished me a happy birthday and gave me a hug. My uncle and auntie will be coming over soon to celebrate!
"Today is special! You'll get familiar!" My mother squealed, and my father smiled and nodded. We ate yesterday straight from the garden yesterday.
"What is familiar?" I asked.
"It's like a pet.." mom began.
"The toads in the roses?" I interrupted. They both laughed.
"No moonbeam, it's a pet that protects you and is always with you," my father chuckled. I nod excitedly.
"Show me yours!" I said sitting amongst the snapdragons. The delicate flowers tickle my elbows as I sit on some soft grass.
My father stepped up and touched the snake tattoo on his arm, "Tatsu awaken!" He called. A snake slithered from his tattoo and coiled around him. I sat in awe as my mother cleared her throat.
"Moon to me!" She called as a pure white owl appeared and perched on her shoulder. "Now stand up straight, say your full name and title. And call your creature forth!" Her voice was soft and encouraging. I stood up and held my arm out, and called, "I am Selene Aizawa, daughter of the last queen of the Moon Lake clan and her mate. I call you forth to be mine!" Soon a large black wolf with bright blue eyes loped toward me. He bowed, and I heard a deep voice in my head, "my master, I come to fulfill your call. Say my new name and seal our bond, " his voice soothed me.
"Black frost!" I call as my forearm burns and a wolf tattoo forms. He was and is a wild spirit so I kept him out and beside me. I was so happy.
At ten there is a soft knock at the door, I spring up and rush to the door. I jump into my uncle's arms, he catches me and throws me into the air. I giggle as my parents enter the doorway. I lean back in his arms and smile, and they smile back.
"Hello Sho, Zash, come in!" My father said, sweeping an arm out. They walk in and the adults talk while I play on the floor with Frost and my stuffed rabbit, Opal. Soon I feel a soft band wrap around me and pull me onto the table.
"Hello Little listener, do you want some cake?" my auntie Zashie asked with his huge smile so bright it hurt my eyes at the time. I nodded happily as I squirmed out of the scarf and sat on my mother's lap. We ate chocolate cake and then went into the garden. I run through the garden and catch toads. I bring one of the big toads to the porch where my family is sitting. I smile and lift it up for my Uncle to see, I have a huge smile. Soon I go to bed, happily curled under my blanket.
That is my life for two years, perfect with my family. My aunt and uncle visit often on the weekends and on breaks. However, that all changes one crisp fall evening...
That is my favorite memory...not two weeks later my life changed forever.
