t/w for depressing thoughts, barely mentioned themes of rape/non con (you may only truly pick up on it if you read this tag), slight mentions of consensual sexual themes (a little like the last tag for how much it's mentioned), and depression

Y/n was a good person. They made good decisions and kept out of trouble. They never hung around with the wrong crowd. Of course they swore and made dirty jokes and was a very honest person -sometimes so much it became their disadvantage- but they were good.

They had been happy and thriving. They had gone home every night content with a sense of fulfillment. They had their off days like everyone else, but they were generally optimistic. The kind of person who had a radiation of happiness that always infected people every time they'd pass by.

Then one day that changed. At some point their bad days began to outweigh their good, and they didn't know what to do about it.

Marc had come into y/n's life at one point. They couldn't pinpoint when, but he did, and he made everything better than it had been before. They even knew that he was divorced, but they didn't care. His divorce didn't matter, until it did. And by then it was too late.

Y/n wasn't even sure what had changed. Maybe Marc had always acted the way he did and they were just too lovesick to notice, but something had shifted, and they didn't like it.

Suddenly y/n's life was based off of some woman they never met.

When the two of them would go out at night they could see that Marc was longing for something that wasn't them.

They were the tattoo on Marc's sleeve, but the ex-wife, Layla, was the tattoo on his heart. She always was and always had been. Y/n cursed themselves for not noticing it sooner. They almost felt bad for dragging the man around everywhere when he didn't want to be. For putting so much into something that wasn't real. He knew their secrets, they knew his. They had stayed for the reasons Layla left, but that wasn't enough.

And maybe a part of y/n always knew that but never wanted to admit it.

Y/n loved Marc but Marc loved Layla. The love was shared for twenty four months and though Layla was never there, it felt like she was, no matter how much y/n tried to ignore the feeling. Y/n had just been a distraction to the Marc, and it took far too long for them to realize.

When y/n kissed Marc's lips they tasted Layla. When they touched his skin they felt her. In between the two of them, in the sheets, something was off. Y/n knew that they weren't on Marc's mind.

Hell, if they were the only person left on Earth they knew Marc wouldn't be satisfied. He'd be thinking about Layla, guaranteed, and though it hurt, they couldn't blame him. Things didn't end very well between the two of them. It was a given that he longed for his wife, and no matter what, y/n could never fill her place.

On the twenty-second-month-mark y/n tried to change so Marc would be more attracted to them. They didn't like to admit that they had done so, but it was what happened, whether they liked it or not. They had just figured that if they were more appealing to the man, he would remember his attraction towards them. He didn't.

Y/n wasted way too much money buying fancier, nicer, more form fitting clothes. They even went as far as cutting their hair so Marc wouldn't become bored. They tried to change things up, but all they ended up achieving was making a fool of themselves.
