"All I'm saying is I find
it difficult to believe."
Began Mary, glaring down at Sarah."But it's the truth, Mary."
Replied Sarah.
"Really?"
"Honest to God."
"So if I was to go next door
and open that washing basket of yours..."
"You wouldn't find any darks.
What, do you think I'm holding out on you?"
"I don't know what to believe."
"Listen, I've plenty of coloureds.
You're welcome to my coloureds."
"I'm not interested in
your coloureds, Sarah."
"It's darks I need.
Oh, listen, Da.-""Do not be starting at
me about darks, Mary."
Joe cut her off.
"I've given you whatever darks I have. Stick on a half load and
be done with it, woman.""A half load goes against
everything I stand for. You know that, Da."
"You away to do the big shop, Da?"
Sarah Cut in.
"Aye."
Joe replied."Gerry! Gerry!
I don't see why that useless drip
you call a husband has to be coming."
Joe called his son-in-law"Because someone needs to drive
and you've been suspended, again.""What did you do this time, Daddy?"
Asked Sarah
"Nothing.
It's RUC discrimination.
The only crime I committed
was to be born a Catholic.""Gerry's never been suspended
and he's a Catholic."
Commented Mary."He's also a prick, but that's by the by."
Retorted Joe."Cut that out, Da."
Gerry came through the door exclaiming
"Found some."
"Oh!"
Said Mary
"Found some, Mary."
He brandished a black pair of socks.
"Great."
Mary said, downtrodden.
"Right. That's us away. "
Said Joe, walking away.
"Have a nice time."
Mary told Gerry"Tell that Free State
fucker to shift his hole!"
Exclaimed Joe"I'm sure we will."
Said Gerry"There's no shame in doing a
half load, you know, Mary.""I can't, Sarah. I physically can't."
Y/N, James, Michelle, Claire, Orla and Erin arrived home all talking over each other about the day they had, but Mary was too busy feeling elated about the fact that she could now do a full load of washing.

"Hey! Let me look at that.
You call that clean, do you?"
Mary said to James as he put the dried plate down
The group were all washing dishes in sectors, stripped down to their underwear and their white school shirt."Different standards, you see, Mary.
You're not in England now, son."
Sarah said directed at James."Orla was the one who washed it."
Retorted James
"Oh, OK. OK.
I have had it with you,
James, and your picking,
picking, picking, and I won't
take it anymore. Do you hear me?"
Exclaimed Orla, getting progressively louder."Is everything OK, Orla?"
Asked Y/N rubbing her shoulder comfortingly.
"I warned you, Orla.
"You're putting yourself
under too much pressure."
Said Sarah
"Can't fail, Mammy."
Replied Orla looking down."Since when have you been
troubled by exams?"
Asked Erin
"Exams?
"What are you on about, Erin?"
Questioned Orla.
"What are you on about, Orla?"
"Step."
"I'm sorry?"
"Step aerobics.""Orla has got really into step aerobics.
Her instructor says she's a natural.
Says she's got what it
takes to go all the way."
Sarah added."All the way in step aerobics?"
Questioned Mary."But it's out of control now, Mary.
She's stepping morning, noon and night.
Apart from anything else, it's dangerous.
She nearly came through
the ceiling yesterday.
OK, she might be gifted, but I just
want her to have a normal childhood."
Said Sarah.
"I won't give it up. I can't."
Said Orla firmly.
"Listen to yourself, love."
Replied Sarah.
