Chapter Seven

Kim's POV

After Voight abruptly leaves to take a call in his office the squad turns back to their solemn expressions that empathize with the dark bags under their eyes. The energy that once flowed through the room effortlessly has run dry. About half of us think it will remain that way for the foreseeable future. Sometimes I think they might be right, her shoes are not capable of being filled.

The typical yelling in Voight's phone calls has come to a close. He comes out of his office, I expect him to say nothing and continue on with the new case. We are once again met with silence, but this time it feels different. Voight has a glow to him that we haven't seen in weeks. He walks over to the white board and turns it to the other side. Erin's case... He writes down a name and smacks a picture on the board. There is the anger we were waiting for.

"The abductor was Sam Applegate and brother..." Voight motions to Mouse as he searches through our databases and comes up with "John Applegate".

Voight writes John's name on the board while waiting on the photo, after placing his picture next to Sam's he announces to the squad.

"Well these are our targets". My breath catches, is she even alive?

"Where did you get the lead sarge?" I ask nervously as I keep telling myself that it won't be the medical examiner.

"Jay found Erin in an alley, I know it sounds crazy". Was he yelling because she died? If so, what kind of sick joke is it to be set up so Jay finds her dead?

Alvin speaks up from the corner asking the painstaking question for all of us.

"Is she alive?" The deafening silence hangs over all of us while Voight absorbs the question.

"No, Jay is taking her to the hospital now. She is not in the best condition and she is pretty shaken up. We will know more after the doctors look at her".

"Are we going to the hospital?" Adam jumps in for the first time in weeks excited with the idea that our friend is alive.

"No, these people are on the loose and are after others right now. Jay is going to stay with her until we have these monsters in custody". The team lightens up and is quick to gather any information they can find about these two.
