Chapter Nine

Jay POV

Shortly after Erin left for surgery Will brought me to the waiting room. We have been sitting here in silence, staring at the wall. I am pulled out of my trance when I can hear his pager going off.

"I'm sorry Jay, they need me downstairs. She is going to be okay, don't beat yourself up".

"Thank you for everything". I say softly, not wanting to break the silence in the room.

"Hey, that's what brothers are for!" Will gives me one of his signature smiles before walking off.

I continue to stare at the wall, it is going to be like this for at least another hour. I should tell Voight what is going on. I quietly get up from my chair and pull out my phone. I make my way to the stairwell while pressing Voight's contact.

H: Is Erin okay?

J: She is in surgery right now

H: Why would she need surgery?

J: Will and Natalie said Erin broke four ribs, one of them punctured her kidney. They said it will probably be fine. They did say that she also is severely dehydrated and starved. Everything else is minor.

H: They did all of that, didn't they?

J: Probably, do you have any leads on them yet?

H: Well, we have no leads as to where they are. We looked at everything, but when we have him I will make sure he never sees the light of day again.

J: Wait, when Erin and I were in that case, wasn't he in an orphanage for a while...

H: Right, the one that was abandoned a little while back?

J: Yeah, I think so.

H: We are going to check on that lead right now. Do not leave the hospital.

I hang up the phone and put it back in my pocket. I have at least another hour of staring at the wall. I may have been told that she will be fine but there is always a chance it could go wrong. That would be a heartbreak time could never mend.

After what felt like days Connor finally came out of the operating room. I quickly jump to my feet and meet him halfway across the waiting room, the second we meet my heart jumps into my throat.

"Is she okay?" I ask, fearing the answer. Before either of us can say anything Ava walks through the doors.

"Did you tell him yet?" Ava asks Connor while joining his side.

Connor is now smiling allowing my heart to lower along with my spiked breathing that I did not notice.

"No, we were getting there. Erin is okay and is going to make a full recovery. There were no issues with the surgery, but we can't pinpoint her recovery time just yet".

"Thank you so much for everything. Can I see her?" I ask knowing that they cannot say no to me, I will fight anyone that gets in the way of me seeing her.

Ava responds while turning towards the elevator. "Yeah, she is in a recovery room right now, i'll take you".

"Thanks". I follow Ava into the elevator, as the doors close I ask the question that has been haunting me since I got the news.

"How long is she going to be here?" She hates being in hospitals and there is no way she is spending less than a night here. We would both rather her recover at home.

"I am sorry but she is probably going to be here for a week, I know she hates hospitals. We will make sure she is as comfortable as possible". As Ava finishes the elevator dings indicating we are on the fifth floor. As we walk to her room Ava says one more thing before opening the door.
