Nina and Richard sat on the floor in the kitchen in silence. The girl didn't want to talk to him and the boy didn't know what to say, even though he wanted to.
It was very difficult for him to sit with a person he thought would be his best friend forever and now they wouldn't even look at each other.
"I'm sorry." suddenly he said in a low voice.
Honestly, he didn't know what he was apologizing for but he knew she was angry with him and certainly had a good reason even if she didn't want to tell him.
She looked at him in disbelief. Nina didn't believe he was serious. "And what are you sorry for?" she rolled her eyes.
"I do not know." he shook his head. "But I know you're angry and you're not stupid, and when you say you have your reasons, that must be true."
The girl didn't know what to think about it. Part of her wanted to trust him but her brain told her to leave and never talk to him again.
"I'm also sorry for how I behave. I shouldn't have yelled." he looked at her sadly and the brunette believed him for a moment. "You don't owe me any explanation."
The girl looked at the ground. "You must have known that when you return after years, everything will be different." she said quietly.
"Yeah," the singer nodded and said after a moment of silence. "I guess I just wasn't expecting such a change... I mean, I knew you wouldn't jump into my hands right away with a big smile, but I didn't expect you to hate me." he sighed. "What did I do?"
Nina took a deep breath, thinking she was ready to tell him, but before she could begin she heard his voice again.
"No, sorry. I have to respect that you don't want to tell me." he told her and looked away.
She didn't know if she should keep quiet or tell him what had happened to her, so she was silent for a minute but then finally decided. "You left." she told him quietly with her gaze still on the ground.
Ricky looked at the girl in surprise. "But you wanted me to go."
"I know," she nodded, trying to hold back the tears. "I wanted you to go because it was always our dream and I wanted you to have that dream come true. I wanted you to go because I was convinced that nothing would change between us. But it did... "
He shook his head. "But I also didn't want us to change."
Nina didn't listen to what he said and continued. "I thought that even if you were miles away, you would always be there for me, that if I woke up in the middle of the night because I had a nightmare, I would still be able to call you and you would pick it up like before. I knew you wouldn't come to my house at three in the morning just to hug me and say it would be okay as you used to, but I was hoping you'd at least pick up the phone calls."
"But I wanted to be there for you." he interrupted her. "If you called I would cancel everything just so I could tell you it would be okay."
"No, that's the problem." she said, looking at him for the first time in the conversation. "I called. I called you and at first you picked it up and told me you'd call later because you couldn't talk at that moment and you didn't call until two days later. Few weeks later your assistant picked up your calls and told me you couldn't talk to me that you would call later but you didn't call. Then no one picked up the phone calls, so I stopped trying." she explained.
"I'm so sorry. But my assistant never told me you called."
"Well it happened." Nina shrugged. "You can't change it."
"Is that really all?" Richard asked.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, as I know you- or as I used to know you, you always give people a second chance. Do you really hate me just because of the phone calls?"
The girl looked at the ground, wondering if she would really tell him the whole truth. "My dad died."
"What?" it shocked the curly boy.
"Yeah," she nodded with tears in her eyes. "And I needed you like never before, and when your assistant told me you had an interview and that you would call me later, I waited all day and night for your phone call, but you never called."
"I didn't know that."
"On the day of his funeral I called you again." she continued, ignoring what he was saying. "Because I needed to hear your voice, I needed you to calm me down because I cried historically in my room and didn't let anyone in."
Ricky just listened quietly to the girl in front of him and couldn't believe it was true. He hated the fact that he wasn't there for her at that time and that he didn't have a chance to hug her tightly then.
"I needed my best friend." she whispered, and a big tear rolled down her cheek.
The boy hated seeing her cry, so he wanted to comfort her somehow but didn't know what to say. When they were little he always hugged her and wouldn't let go until she was okay but he was sure she didn't want to hug him now. But Ricky wasn't good with words.
"And when I called you at the funeral, I found out you blocked my number."
"What? I didn't block your number."
"Well someone did."
"I- I didn't know that." he slowly shook his head again. "If I knew all this, I would fly here so I could be here with you. My manager, the fans, my whole career, it wouldn't matter. The only thing I would care about would be you."
"But that is not how it happened." she said sadly.
"I'm so sorry." he whispered looking straight into her eyes.
Nina felt uncomfortable as they just sat there staring at each other, so she quickly stood up. "Um, I'm going to see if uh- if the paparazi are still the-there." she said and began to walk towards the door.
The popstar was still sitting on the ground in complete shock at the information he had just learned.
After a few seconds the brunette said. "They're gone. We um- we should go."
"What?" he stood up quickly. "No, we need to talk about this."
She rolled her eyes. "You wanted to know why I treat you like this and I told you but I don't want to talk about it anymore. I have to go study so I tell you nicely, please leave." she looked at him angrily.
He sighed but since he didn't want to anger the girl he decided to go. But when he was at the door he stopped and turned again towards her. "Bye Nina." he said quietly and left.
"Bye Richard." she whispered after few seconds but he didn't hear that.
