Carter was fascinated. Of course, it's not like he's never been to a museum. Heck, museums were almost like his second home, but there was just something about walking around and being surrounded by old Egyptian artifacts that won't attack him at any given moment that gives him a sense of peace.
He was staring at an ancient mural of the A'Aru, or the Field of Reeds when he felt a presence creep up behind him. "It's a beautiful place, innit?" He turned around to see a man in his 30s with curly hair, eye bags, and the museum uniform looking at the mural. "You've been?" Joked Carter, making the man chuckle. "Heard it from a friend." Said the man before looking at him and winking.
Carter, who was considering the possibility the man beside him was an escaped soul from the Duat, sighed before chuckling as well. "The golden reeds, the heavenly paradise where Osiris rules. I reckon it's a bit uncomfortable, honestly. Walking among all of those reeds." Said the man before walking away. "Probably." Said Carter watching the man leave. His eyes lingered on the mural of the golden reeds before he walked deeper into the museum.
After about an hour of wandering the museum, Carter walked to the gift shop, where he knew he'd find something for his sister. He approached the counter and got greeted by the same man from earlier.
"Hello there again. Didn't take you for someone to fall for tourist traps like these." Said the man, shoving a basket of Taweret stuff toys behind the counter. "I don't. Just thought I'd get my sister something. She likes dumb stuff like these." Said Carter, picking up a sphynx keychain with a riddle underneath it.
"The answer to that is pyramid. If your sister likes sweets, she might like these jackal gummies." Said the man, gesturing to the jackal gummies, glaring at them a little. The glare, of course, didn't go unnoticed by Carter. "Based on that expression of yours, I'd rather not buy them." The man had a small look of surprise, not knowing he was making it before he composed himself. "Oh no, it's just a bit too sweet for my tastes. Your sister would probably like them." Said the man, smiling and lying through his teeth.
"If you say so." Said Carter, picking up two packs and placing them on the counter. "I'll buy two. I wanna try them myself." The man rung the two packs up. "Three pounds." He said, pushing the gummies forward. Carter gave him the amount, grabbed both packs, opened one up, and ate one gummy. "Yeah, they're pretty sweet." Said Carter. "Told you so." Said the man, grabbing a basket of Anubis stuff toys this time and shoving them beside the Taweret ones.
"I'll be going now. Bye." Said Carter, waving goodbye and walking towards the exit. "Cheers, be safe." Said the man, waving goodbye to the kid as well. After the kid left his eyesight, he sighed before glancing at the tiny vanity mirror beside him. "So you felt it too, huh?" Said the reflection.
"Obviously, who wouldn't?" Said the man, fixing the sphynx keychain rack. "We should be wary of that kid." Said his reflection on the counter in Spanish. "Again, I don't understand you mate. Besides, he's just a kid, isn't he? What's the worst he could do?" Said the man, staring at the exit. "Just, be careful, okay Steven?" Said his reflection in the mirror. Steven sighed. "I know Marc, don't worry, I will."
"Took you long enough." Said Sadie, hearing the front door shut. "This is what I get after buying you candy? Rude." Said Carter, tossing the jackal gummies onto her lap. He already finished his on the way home.
"Did you buy this from a corner store or from that museum you went to?" Asked Sadie, already eating one. "The museum. Met a nice guy there. One of the employees." Said Carter, plopping down on the couch beside Sadie. "D'you get his name?" Asked Sadie, almost done with the gummies. "I saw his name was "Steven", according to the name tag."
"Stephen?"
"No, Steven, with a V not a PH."
"Oh, like Mackintosh?"
"Who?"
Sadie gasped, dramatically putting a hand to her chest. "We're having a movie marathon and you don't have a say in this." Said Sadie, grabbing the remote and started flicking through channels, looking for Steven Mackintosh films on.
Carter sighed. "It's probably on Netflix or something which this old TV doesn't have." Sadie stopped flicking through channels before swearing slightly under her breath. "You sure?" Carter nodded, making her groan and accidentally switch the tv to a theory show, which was talking about the "Rolling Sky Phenomenon of Cairo", which happened years ago. Before Sadie and Carter joined the Twenty-first Nome.
"Hey, did anyone from the House figure out what happened that night?" Asked Carter, making Sadie look at the screen. "I got a text message from Zia a few days ago saying that the Per Ankh had their own theories, but it was most likely that old bugger, Khons, the moon god guy."
"Him?" Said Carter disgustedly. He still had an grudge against him ever since the gamble for extra time. "Don't worry, I don't like him either, not after what happened with Bes." Said Sadie darkly, glaring at the moon shining through the window.
"You two! Dinner's ready!" Yelled their grandmother from the dining room. The two looked at each other before silently agreeing to continue their conversation later.
