*River's POV*
The entire plane ride I never let go of Roan's hand. I knew it was irrational but it felt like if I did he would slip away back to that awful place. So I held on, tight, and even when my hand was sweating I didn't dare let go and neither did he. For the first time in a long time I felt somewhat safe. Even if I was on a plane with strangers and I had no idea where they were taking us or what they really planned to do with us. I was calm and genuinely tired. I felt as if I hadn't slept the entire six years we spent at Eichen. Even when I did I had horrible night terrors. I mean, shaking, screaming, dripping sweat mixed with tears type night terrors. I had deep hollowed out under eye bags that were very noticeable. It was like I was actually ready to close my eyes without worry for the first time. So I did. I shut my eyes and quietly drifted to sleep on Roan's shoulder. My hand wrapped in his.
I had no dream but at least it wasn't a night terror. When I woke I found Roan still in the same place. He in fact wasn't torn from me in my sleep but instead we were actually safe. I let out a breath and he turned to look at me.
"Good morning" he laughed.
"Hmm," I rubbed my eyes and began to sit up. "How long was I asleep?" I stretched.
"Just a couple hours." He stated casually.
My eyes shot open "hours?!" I said back louder than intended.
He laughed "yeah look out the window we are in America now."
"Already?" I asked as I peaked out the window. He was right I could tell just by looking at the packed city bellow and the blue cloudless sky. From all the way up here it looks so simple and harmless.
A random agent walks in and tells us "we will be landing soon. Prepare your things-" but he looks over at the single cardboard box full of books that Roan got from his room and then just smiles and leaves.
I chuckle a little under my breath. This is nice I thought. To be fun and feel like a teenager rather than a weapon, nuisance, or a monster. Just simply a teenager going to America.
The jet landed on the balcony of a large skyscraper with the name "Stark" plastered on the side.
"Oh god!" I mumbled under my breathe when I first saw it. To which Roan chuckled.
Before we could get off the plane Fury told us that they were simply picking up a couple of things and we would be heading to the compound building shortly. The compound is where we would meet the Avengers (again). So we waited and played board games. I even chatted with a couple of the agents assigned to watch us and from what I could tell they didn't seem too bad. Finally we touched down to a large open field in front of the compound.
It was strange because as we walked off the ramp and onto the smoothly paved walkway to the doors, I felt my stomach twist. What was I to be nervous of? Well, I suppose they could decide they don't want me and send us back to Eichen, but Fury is basically the boss so if he wants us here I don't think there is much anyone else can say to stop him. The Avengers could try to attack us, but I feel pretty confident I would be able to take them down while protecting Roan and Myself. Maybe I was just scared of what they would think of us after all this time. As I was thinking about this, a sudden realization hit me. I should not be scared of them! They ruined my life not the other way around! As I looked over at my brother who looked more nervous than I had felt I squeezed his hand and promised myself I would never let them hurt us again. Not for mine but for his sake.
Fury led us down many long halls until finally he told us to stand against a wall until he told us to come out. Then he walked in the closest room and I heard them. The Avengers all broke the silence asking why they were there and what Fury thought was so important as to prevent them from training.
" I have an announcement to make." He said.
"Get on with it Fury, some of us have real jobs to do." One said.
"Shut it Stark your gonna want to hear this." Fury snapped back. My eyes narrowed at the thought of him.
"We have two new recruits joining the team." And the room exploded with confused, angry, and objecting comments.
"Quiet!" Fury yelled which forced the room to a still silence. "Almost all of you already know these two. I want to stress the importance of not underestimating them." He glances over to me before continuing. "Say a warm welcome to River and Roan Rae!" He claps his hands as we walk out but nobody else dares to move or speak.
I walk into the middle of the room with Roan close behind me. I can't help the smirk that takes over my face at the shocked states of all of them.
"Miss us?" I ask cheekily.
"What are you they doing here!" Steve asks not us but Fury as if we are not even in the room.
"They are the recruits." He says simply
"They can't stay here." Steve replies.
"They can and they will. Don't forget who founded this team." Fury warns Steve.
"They-" Steve begins to talk but I cut him off.
"They! Are right in front of you so you can speak to us if you have a problem!" I yelled. There was a long pause of silence while Steve and I glared at each other until-
"Who exactly are these people?" A man in the back of the group said arrogantly. My focus broke from Steve to this man. I walked closer to him, analyzing every detail of him. Without saying anything I held out my hand.
"River Rae nice to meet you." I said with a smile. He reached out to shake my hand.
"Wait don't-" the others yelled but it was too late he had latched onto my hand and I had latched onto his mind.
You see, the last time I was in this building the Avengers became aware of a little power of mine. Mind Reading. When I touch someone I have the ability to see into their minds. By my first day at the compound I had known everyone's tragic backstory and everything they tried to hide.
When I peered into the man's mind I knew his whole life in a split second. Once I was done I dropped his hand and smiled. The others let out an discontent breath. He rubbed his head confused.
"Nice to meet you Thor Odinson, of Asgard. God of lightning." I smirked
"You've heard of me?" He questioned proudly.
"Nope." I answered turning on my heels and sauntering over to another man I did not recognize. He looked defensive so I knew he wouldn't be as easy to trick. So I quickly grabbed his shoulder with no warning. He was a much more humble person. I think I could actually get used to this one I thought.
"Sam Wilson, the Falcon as they call you."
"Okay how is she doing that?!" He said calmly but I could hear the confusion and slight fear behind his voice.
"She can read your mind by touching you. They both have magical abilities" Tony spoke up for the first time.
"Among other things" I added.
"So your a... Witch?" Sam asked.
My body snapped around to face him. "Uh, No!" I corrected.
"We are the embodiment of Helios and Selene. The greek god and goddess if the sun and moon." Roan told them.
Thor's head shot up "gods? Why have I never seen you before? And why are you so puny?"
"Watch it." I warned.
"We don't live in Asgard we were born and raised on Earth or Midgard to you." Roan answered again.
Thor was just about to spout out another round of questions when Fury spoke again.
"Well this has been nice but I'll be going now."
"What!" Steve and I said at the same time. I knew we were considered Avengers now but we have to live with them and Fury won't even be here?!
"You didn't expect me to stay did you?"
"Your leaving us here?"
"We have to live with them?" Roan and I said at the same time.
"Yes." He said before just walking out of the room. We soon heard a jet engine and he was gone.
Everyone in the room was quiet and just looked at each other.
"We know you don't want us here and you know that we don't want to be here but we can help each other." Roan reasoned.
"What do you get out of this? why are you willing to help us?" Rogers questioned suspiciously.
"He said we won't get sent back there if we help you" I answered emotionlessly.
"Back where? To Harthwaithe?" Tony asked.
Harthwaithe was where we lived with our father.
"No, back to...Eichen" Roan hesitated.
"Why? That place was meant to help you! Why would you want to get away from it so badly?" Steve blurted out.
My eyes shot up to find his as the purest look of confusion took over my face. "Why?" I breathed "Why?!"
Roan grabbed my shoulder stopping me from moving any closer to him. "Riv-"
"No Roan! I won't stop." I locked eyes with Tony now "let me ask you something, did you even f*cking read the brochure?!" I laughed holding back tears. "God! You just shipped us to some random place you didn't even know about!" I felt the tears clouding my vision. They all stared at me with such shock I knew it was true. They had no idea what they had done.
"For six f*cking year of hell I thought you people had to be truly sadistic to send children to a place like that!" I wiped a tear from my cheek. " but no! Your not psychotic or evil, your just f*cking stupid!" I screamed. It was too late now, it wasn't like they could undo their choices but I still wanted them to be as ashamed as possible. "You ruined our lives over what?! You didn't feel like reading the pamphlet!" I couldn't stop it, the tears rushed down my cheeks and I could barely see. I was staring at Tony, his eyes beginning to process the full affect of what he did, when Roan tugged on my arm. I looked down at him angrily. Then I realized. I was looking down at him because I had been so caught up in my emotions that I was many feet off the ground and surrounding me was lamps, chairs, and other furniture floating. Roan motioned for me to take a deep breath and I did. When I exhaled the last of my air I felt my feet touch down on the floor. Now calmly and emotionlessly I looked back to Tony and Steve. They were terrified but honestly I couldn't care less.
"I'm going to bed." I murmured as I quietly walked out of the room and up the stairs. As I ascended the stairs I heard the crash of the furniture hitting the floor. I wandered the halls until I found a room that wasn't locked and I knew it had to be mine.I stayed in that room the whole night. Being emotional made me tired and I fell asleep on the bed in the room.
My dreams once again were filled with the horrors of my past. I suppose we can't start over as easily as I thought we could. I woke up with a yell, there was a knocking at my door and against my better judgment I opened it. There stood Natasha Romanoff.
"Here, dinner. I thought you might be hungry after everything..." she held out a plate of steak, potatoes, and some vegetables. I took the plate and looked up at her unamused.
"This doesn't make up for six years of hunger but thanks anyways." I snarled. I closed the door before she could say anything more.
As I ate the meal I realized that this is what my life will be. Never knowing peace. Going from battle to battle and war to war. Until the day that I finally die.

I wanted to make a bit longer chapters so I hope you like it!🥲
