Chapter 2
Mia<3The song A Change Is Gonna Come plays through the radio as Mia and her mom drive down to the store. Her family is coming down for the weekend and her mom is planning on cooking.
It's supposed to be her cousins (at least four of them), her aunt and uncle, and her grandma and gramps.
To say the house is going to be filled with music is an understatement. Her grandma plays music any chance she gets, especially when cleaning.
Parking the car in the Food Lion parking lot, they get out and walk into the cold store, grabbing a cart and going to the frozen meat aisle.
"You think I should make chicken and rice, steak and mash potatoes, or chicken Alfredo for tonight's dinner?" Alisha–her mother–asks as she holds up a thing of chicken.
"It's whatever you want really. I don't care cause I'm going to eat it anyway." Mia shrugs and speaks, making her mother laugh.
"Yeah but will your cousin eat it? That man has been picky since he was eight years old."
Mia furrows her brows, leaning her elbows on the cart. "He can starve then. He can't be picky forever." She says with seriousness.
"Yeah well tell him that." Her mom sucks her teeth before grabbing the steak and moving on to the produce section.
"And will cause we not doing that back and forth stuff he always wanting to do." Mia rolls her neck and rolls her eyes before driving the cart over to the bread section.
She grabs the sandwich bread then rolls the cart back to the aisle her mom went down. "You can do that. Just be ready to argue honey."
"I'm always up for arguing. You know this ma." They both grin at each other before her mom shakes her head, mumbling 'my child' before putting the mash potatoes in the cart.
{Back home}
"E.J.!" The yell of her mom has her covering her ears with her bag filled hands. She sets them on the counter before hearing the heavy sound of running coming from up stairs.
"Yeah ma?" E.J. questions as he stands in the middle of the kitchen with his gaming headset on his head and controller in hand.
"Go get the rest of the stuff out the car. It ain't a lot." With a nod, he goes to the front door, slipping on his slides and going out to get the rest of the stuff.
"So you ready to get your hair done?" Alisha ask as she puts the bread in the bread cabinet and sticks the bag under a random cabinet they use for grocery bags.
Mia nods as she sets the steak on the counter then grabs the cereal boxes. "Yeah. It's been a minute."
Mia doesn't like getting her hair done like that because she likes her curly hair more and wants to do different styles on her hair when she gets bored of that one style.
With braids, wigs, or sew ins, you can't really change it up and have to stick with that one style. She likes to switch it up.
But her grandma wants to do family photos so she thought why not get her hair done for this.
"My baby gone look so cute." Alisha squeals, rounding the counter and stopping in front of her daughter.
With her having her at the age of twenty, they grew up together. Even though E.J. was born first, the two girls have a special bond.
A bond that's just indescribable.
They share the same confidence that most don't have, they don't keep secrets from each other, they both have compassion and respect for each other.
Most mothers don't have that with their kids and that's why Mia is grateful to be around her mother.
"When are grams and gramps coming?" Mia ask as she sits at the island counter and sips a mango monster drink.
"I'm not sure..." The door opening has her stopping when she hears the sound of her mother's voice laughing.
"Well never mind then." They laugh before exiting the kitchen and going to the living room where the kids' grandparents are and where their mom's parents are.
"Hey my grand babies!" Their grandma speaks loudly as she walks to them and pulls them into a hug.
"Hey grandma. How are you?" E.J. questions as he's the first to pull away from the hug.
"I'm good. How bout y'all? Y'all been okay?" They all shake their heads.
"Hey daddy." Alisha's southern voice speaks out as she hugs her father. Between the two of them, their bond is unbreakable.
She was always and will always be a daddy's girl.
"Hey sweetheart, how are you?" Her dad ask after kissing her forehead.
"I'm good. How are you?"
As the adults continue to talk, the two siblings move on in the kitchen, grabbing snacks after snacks then moving back upstairs and into E.J.'s room.
"Avengers or Black Widow?" He questions as he grabs the remote and jumps on his bed. Mia follows suite and lays on the other side of him, shrugging her shoulders.
"Doesn't matter to me just play one."
E.J. rolls his eyes before pressing the Avengers and opening the bag of hot fries.
{Four hours later}
It's now night time and all her family showed up hours ago. They were all loud and rowdy and hungry.
They annoyed her like crazy.
Drying her face with a wash cloth, Mia sighs before grabbing her packet of floss and getting one out before flossing her teeth.
She finishes with that then goes in with her mouthwash and brushing her teeth. She wipes her mouth before putting her moisturizer and Vaseline on.
She cuts the lights off in the bathroom before walking over to her bed and pulling the cover back, getting in and grabbing her framed glasses.
She grabs the book off the side of her table and gets to finishing the last page she was on. Before she knows it, thirty minutes has gone by and forty chapters are done.
She grabs her phone and checks the time seeing two am on the lock screen. She sighs and puts her glasses on the desk and sets her alarm for tomorrow morning.
She cuts her LED lights to dark orange then cuts the brightness down.
Turning around and lifting the covers over her head, she starts drifting off to sleep and wishing for an off day.
