GRIMMAULD PLACE
1975
Today was the day. Sirius decided. He couldn't wait anymore, he wouldn't survive. At least not as himself. His parents had finally brought up what everyone was thinking, they wanted him to get the mark. To serve him, that monster. Well no thank you, absolutely not, no way in hell was he doing that. So here he was in a shouting match with his mother, his father had already headed up to his study, and Regulus was in his room doing… whatever it is he gets up to their days. 'Probably fantasizing about joining the Dork lords ranks one day.' Sirius thought bitterly. Only to be hit with a wave of guilt when he thinks about his sweet little brother and him when they were younger. How he promised they would always be together. His brother used to be so… good, sweet, innocent. Now he's just… just… Sirius is hit with the sudden realization that he doesn't really know his brother anymore.
'Bloody hell we really have gone down separate paths, haven't we reggie?' He thinks.
He yells something about giving the heirship to Regulus because he sure as hell doesn't want it if these are the conditions.
"He is obedient but weak. He would never make it. You'd be sentencing him to a death sentence. '' she spat venomously. Somehow the lowering of her voice made the statement even worse.
Sirius faltered for a moment realizing the truth in her words. 'Reggie probably wouldn't make it.' He thought before covering his face with a venomous glare. "It doesn't matter to me, I'm leaving." He lies.
Walburga raised her wand and Sirius braced himself as a single word spilled past her lips.
"Crucio!"
Sirius dropped to the ground and let out agonizing screams feeling like his Body was on fire, being skinned, and ran through with blades all at once.
He didn't know how long she kept him there but he heard Regulus bound down the stairs.
As he was writhing on the ground. Sirius' flicked his eyes in the direction of the sound trying to find his brother and could make out a vague shape that resembled him and he gave Regulus' form a pleading look trying to say everything he wasn't able to.
Please. Go, leave. I can't protect you from here. I'm sorry you have to see this. It's ok.
He heard their Mother snap at Regulus. "Happened to your face boy?" She huffed. "Nevermind that, you probably got into something you couldn't handle again. No matter, go to your room. Now." The intensity of the spell lessened slightly as her attention was divided. But he was already slipping in and out of consciousness. This time is longer than she usually goes.
He hears snippets of their conversation. "Mother, stop." He hears Regulus say quietly with determination in his voice, sending a wave of terror through him. Not for himself but for his little brother. The brother that he always protected, all the stolen punishments, bringing him extra food when mother tried to starve him or just forgot to feed him.
"Regulus," she said his name slowly. His name was a warning, like a mother scolding her child, but her version of scolding was vastly different. More like torture like right now.
'You idiot!' He thinks. 'Just leave! I'll be fine!'
"Now, Mother. Let him go," He winced internally as he heard Regulus sternly say that, knowing he would be punished.
The Cruciatus curse had finally dissipated, leaving a panting and shaking Sirius and an incredibly angry Walburga. Although he realized with terror that her anger was directed at a different son.
He realized she started whispering and backing Regulus up the stairs. He thinks she got his wand but his eyes just won't focus. He hears a slap, then another and realizes with dread that he needs help. Regulus needs help. As he starts trying to get up his brain starts getting even fuzzier, till the only thing on his mind is to get help.
So he wobbled over to his trunk that he pack without really thinking, grabbed the emergency port key he had for tonight, and all he could think as he dragged his trunk was
'Got to get to the potters. Get to James. They would help. I'm sure of it.'
So he activated the port key as soon as he passed the threshold and as the door closed he heard a sound that would haunt him for years. He heard a bone chilling scream of agony that he knows came from his brother. It's enough to knock some clarity into his mind and he has a split second to think. 'What the hell am I doing? He needs me!' Before the door slams and the port key activates. That's the last thought he has because he passes out as soon as he hits the ground in front of Potter Manor.
