Południca, Lady Midday, Lady Rye - she had many names, though the first term was certainly the most popular. Everyone working in the field during the heat of July and August was afraid of it. As the name suggests, it always appeared at noon, when the sun was shining the most. The midday came as a tall, pale, slender woman with loose hair and flowing white robes. Some saw Lady Middays as ghostly skeletons, others as old ladies. Others still described them as beautiful women - no wonder, they were supposed to cast a spell on the man under whom he lost his temper. They wielded a sickle - anyone who fell to the ground from exhaustion, sunstroke (or drunkenness!) While working in the field, was probably beheaded by a field blade of Polish folklore creation. But where did Lady Middays come from? They were the souls of women who died tragically around their own wedding or all the girls who died in childhood. And how could you protect yourself against them? Just staying out of the fields in the midday heat.Due to the famous "The Witcher", Lady Midnights are immediately associated with Lady Middays - also female demons, but those that would strike at midnight. It was probably another name for a night maid, i.e. a folk monster dressed in a black dress, lurking in the wilderness at night or in the woods for a wanderer. But where did they come from? They were the souls of women who died tragically, but - unlike Lady Midday - died before marriage.
