I was pulled inside and walked up to Lainies room. I could hear Shelly and Maureen giggling to their selves and Lainie was quiet. She seemed more calm that the others and less... Annoying. Lainies bedroom was nice and small. There was a big setup of makeup scattered over her vanity. Her collection included blush, eyeliner, mascara, foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, lipstick, and lip gloss. I started to get worried about what Dinger said. Would he really think I'd look that bad? Will I look that bad?
" Alright, let's get this started. You need to wash your face first." Lainie said and started walking through a door leading to her bathroom. I ran some water and put my index finger underneath the running water to see when it was warm. I cupped my hands and filled them with the warm water. I rubbed my face to get off the makeup I wear. I looked up at the mirror and saw the black smudges under my eyes from the running eyeliner. I wiped under my eyes and looked in the mirror once again. I looked like I had just got up.
" I guess im ready now..." I said quietly and awkwardly as I walked out of the bathroom. I am still adjusting to the new "friends" im making. It's been forever since I have hung out with girls that were interested in things like this.
" Perfect. We should get started." Lainie said and patted a little stool infront of her vanity. I sat down and adjusted myself in the small stool the best I could. I kept getting poked at and stroked with brushes. They kept on saying things like " You're gonna look so pretty!" " Dinger will love you!" And, " will this colour match what she's gonna wear?"
I felt a cold metal on my eyebrows. "Oh God, Don't do- OW!" I shouted as Lainie plucked a hair from in between my eyes.
" Sorry, I just wanted to touch up your eyebrows." She said and held the tweezers in her hands.
" It's alright. Go ahead!" I agreed and gave in to the fact that my eyebrows were terrible. Little pricks of the tweezers plucked out the little hairs. I blinked real hard to ease the stings. Once the pain was over, I looked in the mirror, and I do admit, my eyebrows were looking quite nice. My eyebrows were done and they started tugging at my hair. It was brushed, curled, and put into a nice- messy bun. My hair and face looked princess like, while my clothes looked like I went shopping in a goth store. Lainie and I were the same size, so they went picking through her clothes to find me something to wear. They came out with a short light pink dress and a jean jacket. It looked great. I smiled and took the clothing to the bathroom to wear for the night. I came out feeling very uncomfortable around my new friends and in the new clothes. All 3 of them smiled with me.
"You look great! How 'bout we go see a movie?" Lainie asked all of us. I nodded my head and the other two shook theirs.
"My dad wants me home by nine." Maureen said and slung her bag over her shoulder.
"I have a physics test tomorrow." Shelly said and fixed her hair in the mirror.
It was just going to be Lainie and I at the movies tonight. That was good. I am still trying to help Bobby with his girl troubles. We walk Shelly and Maureen out the door and head the other way to the Theater. " How are things with you and Jole?" I ask her and she shrugs her shoulders.
"I don't know anymore. Sometimes I think he really cares for me, and other times I think that there is something- someone better, you know? Well you wouldn't, you and Dinger seem great."
"Sometimes there is someone better." Lainie looks at me and squints her eyes trying to think.
"You're talking about Bobby?"
"Maybe... What do you think about Bobby?"
" He's sweet. He's strange- but sweet."
"Lainie, all guys are strange." I say and point to the group of guys hanging outside the movie theater. As we get closer, I notice the same red firey hair, and white striped cane, standing with the group of guys. "Dinger!" I call out to him and he takes a drag of his smoke as he turns around. His moth drops open and he smiles, hobbling over, and giving me a hug.
"Riley, you look great, I- I - I didn't even recognize you!" I looked over Dingers shoulder and saw his tough looking friends. A guy like Dinger, dating a girl who they think looks like this all the time, must not think that Dinger is as tough as he says he is.
"Thanks, here, come on for a sec," I tell him and pull him to his friends. "Hi." I said to them and they all looked at me. "I know, a guy like Dinger, dating a, weak, small girl like me..." I said and turned my hair in my fingers.
"Yeah, it's not safe for you to be off in the streets at night is it, sweetheart?" One of the boys walked closer to me and I could feel Dingers grip on my hand tighten.
"No, and you know what?" I asked and he smiled. " I can take care of myself." I said and uppercutted him in the jaw, but not hard enough to break it. I heard Dinger laugh and I gave him a kiss walking away back to Lainie and took her hand in mine. " Let's watch a movie."
